Im on my moms laptop right now, and im wondering how the fuck to install norton internet security 2005. We just took off norton 2004, and we tried installing norton 2005 but, its saying "cannot run MSI without setup" while it is in the process of its own setup! and what the fuck is MSI? then it crashes and says "we cannot remove all symantec or norton files on your computer - installation failed"
...
I looked in the norton install file for 2004, and looked at all the files it puts on your computer, cause its all documented. So I tracked down every last norton 2004 file including everything in regedit and deleted all of it. Still the same problem... Theres a bunch of programs on this computer she can't replace and tons that would hours to install (damn auto-digitizing programs).
So without factory installing is there any ideas anyone has towards what could be wrong? She needs this computer protected soon cause shes going to a convention in florida and needs this laptop to be in prime condition.
anyone who solves this gets K+, or in this case, a good rating.

Are you on XP? If not you may need to reinstall windows installer. Here's the link to download it. Microcrap A shot in the dark but could be the problem. Good luck.

sp2 installed? (sp2 includes windows installer 3.0) Is this the retail cd you are trying to install with or a copy?

Try running "del /s /q %temp%" from a command prompt, sometimes Norton can but stupid if there are leftover files in your temp directory.
You could also download and install the latest Windows Installer for XP, this will repair any problems with your current version.
Hope this helps,

ok heres exactly what it says "This MSI must be run through setup." so I click the only available option "Ok." so now it reads "Setup was unable to remove previous versions of this product. Please try manually removing it via add/remove programs." then I once again click the only option which is "Ok." and now it reads "The installation encountered and error and was unable to continue."
I've tried everything you told me Ythan, none of it worked.

Yeah Norton sucks I always have this kind of problem with their shit.
So I assume you tried to remove it through Add/Remove Programs and it didn't work. Try following the instructions here: Removing your Norton program using SymNRT. Then see if you can install the new version.
Peace,

it's funny that norton won't install itself on the comp, because after it gets on there it thinks it owns your comp.

if you go to this page and download this file, you will be much, much more happy. it is called AVG Antivirus and i have seen firsthand that it will remove or contain virii that nortons wont even touch.
