What's the answer?
    #4070191 - 04/18/05 10:02 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Can anyone find the answer to this?

/sigh.

The answer is always yes.

How do you want it answered, in term of mathametics (geometric manipulation), in terms of the picture, or in terms of the creator (S&P forum after all, can talk about the creator of the picture, of the one upstairs)?

that's simple...

the entire triangle is not identical in proportions to the red one and the green one. THey all have different rations of..don't know how to spell.. cathetes, so in rearanging the elements, the additional square is hidden in the differences between angles of hypotenises.
The big hypnotenuse is not a hypotenuse at all because the entire triange is not a triangle at all, but a rectangular (sp?)
The below rectangular has hidden the missing square into the area between the actual top two lines of this object and the top two lines of the above object.
The trick is that these top two lines in both objects are made to look like a hypotenuse of identical triangles

The whole thing is not a perfect triangle.

Look at the slope of each of the triangles:

The small green one is 2/5 (0.4), and the large red one is 3/8 (0.375). So when the green one is on top, the top line of the triangle is concave. Likewise it is convex when the red triangle is on top. That changes the total area of the shape, by just enough to account for 1 square.

If you pretend the shape IS a perfect triangle and look at the surface area, it measures 0.5 units more than the sum of all the individual shapes (32.5 vs 32). In the top shape, without the "hole", the actual area is 32 units because of the concave top line. In the bottom shape, the top line has become convex, allowing 1 extra unit of area for the hole to exist.
