anybody see this movie? Robin williams goes to heaven, and when he hears his wife is in hell, he goes there to try to save her.
theres a lot of interesting ideas in this movie...

Like any other phenomena it needs to be explained. The notion of afterlife did not come from wishfull thinking, but from tradition as much as contemporary experiences.

Every statement made by any man deserves to be taken seriously until it is disputed or explained by means of close examination.
What I find funny about that film is how modern christian world twists religion and all kinds of religious concepts to something that feels intuitive to them. So in afterlife there is a family living toghter as on earth. If the idea of heaven came from christianity, then that makes no sense. In the gospels Jesus clearly states that
people are not marrier in afterlife, but live like angels.
Religion is a take it or leave it kind of thing because it is based on trust and blind belief. So either you trust the texts, or not.
If you doubt certain parts, then you can doubt entire books.
If it says in a religious book that people walk on their hands after death, than you can't just throw that way because it feels illogical to you. It's like trying to analise aerodynamics of a dragon in a firytale.
Most of this twisting comes in sexual morality dogmas. Peoples hearts feel like there is nothing immoral in sex before marriage so they rewrite religion and say: Jesus must have ment this ot must have ment that because it feels right..
Religion is not based on logic or emotions. It's just a bunch of texts that you can follow or not.

Can you imagine a worse Hell than living even the most wonderful life-style in an eternal condition? Any conceivable Heaven is no Heaven at all. The condition needs to be an 'ecstatic moment' which is as close as words can get - not any kind of duration or extension of form.

Here you have added a fallacy and a baseless belief, all-in-one.
1. Baseless Belief: The ancients had greater knowledge. This is not born out in any field of study.
2. Fallacy of time. Repeating a storygives it no more credence than a story told for the first time (usually much less as the story changes.)
I also note that you give no base for the ancient reports; merely telling us that they exist. There are many old stories such as eating a lion's heart will cause long-term physiological changes, which are totally false.
...and based on personal experiences.
Not sure what that means.

I did not say that we should take those things for granted because they are old or wise or whatever..
I'm saying that if a retard, or a shizofrenic comes to you and tells you that he saw a dragon in the sky, you come with him to see what he is talking about, rather than apriori think he is delusional.
Benefit of a doubt, that's what it's all about.
So if something gets repeated in many cultures, it has to be investigated, and taken as a possibility.

I read that book. Richard Matheson wrote it. It presented less than an appealing image. When the main character got to Heaven there were people there who wanted to make him go to school and work a job. I thought "Even in death you can't be free!!!". If there is a Heaven type place I want to go there to have fun, not work some more. In that book there was just as much red tape as on Earth. The movie was more forgiving in this respect, but it misrepresented the book. Of all of Matheson's books I prefer "Hell House".
