hey dudes, aint been around in awhile, but my gorilla friend is having trouble with his casings, he says that of late he can't get shrooms to grow on top of casing only from the side or around the edge of the casing, the trays are aluminum foil so it aint light getting through to the substrate. In addition he says that he does not have an overlay problem, question is could this be from " matting" down (from misting) and mycelium not getting air ? or could it be that his casing material is not "fluffy" enough when applied or what the devil do you guys think ? thanks, my monkey freind is quite frustrated, i think he's gonna snap if he don't figure this out soon !

It actually sounds like a case of your casing layer drying out. Most times a casing that is to dry will fruit on the edges and sides because there is still moisture present there. Try uping the humidity and moisture content inthe center of your casing along with a couple deep scratches to keep matting from taking hold.:)bluhoney

hello, 1) Did he pat down the casing? You're just supposed to put in on there, not pat at all. 2) What's the humidity and temperature? 3) How many time are you fanning? 4) What casing method are you using? Those gorrilas that can sign are great. I wish I had one of those.... Actually I just wish I owned a midget. I would build a dog house for him on my floor and call it a midget house. abudiwa

If it's not an overlay problem, chances are the casing dried out. Best way to keep that from happening is to directly mist the casing daily (sometimes twice daily) in addition to whatever your method of humidification is until pins appear. Let them grow out, and then mist the casing between flushes until more pins appear. And don't forget to scratch, like bluhoney mentioned.
