50/50 Q
    #4068877 - 04/18/05 04:25 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

im learning the ropes on the 50/50 casing tek. i just wanted to get the amounts correct... so tell me if this correct.

1 part verm
1 part peat
1 part water
1/2 part calcium carbonate

im not adding any hydrated lime cause my peat is already neutral, though the calcium should come in handy when my casing starts to become acidic.

First of all, are you absolutely sure your peat is neutral?  Even if it says it is on the packaging I wouldn't trust it.  I just started working w/ peat myself, and noticed after some pH testing that the bag is a liar.  You want 1 part verm, 1 part peat, then just mix water in until it just barely drips water out when you squeeze it.  Not flowing water out, just barely drips.  Then test your pH and adjust accordingly.  I adjusted my pH to 7.5, and I think its gonna work out well... The calcium carbonate is a buffer, just milder than hydrated lime.
