Is it time to fruit??? (pics)
    #4068428 - 04/18/05 01:27 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Ok, first of all, sorry for the bad quality cel phone pictures. I will get better ones asap.
This is again related to my experience doing a casing with agar spawn.
The substrate was fully colonized so I prepared a casing mix with 40% verm and 60% coco coir, sterilized ina microwave and after cooling I added a layer to the tray. The layer was about 1 cm deep. In 2 days this layer was fully colonized, this pictures where taken yesterday.

Tray #2 - not yet fully colonized, but the mycelium has reached the top and is touching the strech film that is covering the tray. I bet that by tomorrow it will be pretty much fully colonized.

So, should I proceed to fruit now? Or should I add some more casing mix?

thanks for the feedback

Whoa! I would say patch those white spots and indroduce to fruiting RIGHT AWAY!

That is some pretty intense overlay. i would suggest covering the really white areas with a light layer of casing, then fruit.

it could be...
That part with the biggest colonization on the second tray is not showing much rhiso, it's more cotton like growth.

Should I only cover it or should I scrape a little before?

many of those photos show some great rhiso growth, as far as i can tell from them!

i'm always a bit scared to scrape, but others might have different opinions. always think the less intrusion, the better...

I would recomend just patching those white spots lighly then fruit it. You should have thrown it in fruiting chamber when mycelium just starts poking through, like this.

Hey, don't know if you know this or not, but you're not supposed to completely colonize your casing layer. Those should have been placed in the fruiting chamber day's ago. Also, you may want to check your casing mix ratio's. You used 40% vermiculite and 60% coco coir. 60/40 verm/coir, or even 70/30 verm./coir might have been better.
Good Luck.

The first picture has all rhiso, it's the second one that is showing the cotton like growth.
Maybe then I will add a tiny layer of casing mix to both of them and then proceed to fruit.

more false info from this chick. you were on the right track. more coir in the casing is better. 60/40 coir/verm is good so is 65/35. 70/30 IME is noticably harder to work with than 60/40

read a bit on bulk, seeing the gladwrap assumes it's a bulk tray. which INDEED needs to be 100% colonized.

You patch by adding a very thin layer of the casing layer.

I don't know how to edit, so just to clarify : you patch by adding a very thin layer of the casing layer over the colonized parts of the casing.

Too bad he's not talking about his bulk substrate being colonized. He said 2 days after casing his casing layer was colonized. Not sure, but I didn't think you wanted your casing layer colonized. Thought you were supposed to patch and fruit when mycelium first pokes through. That is more then poking through. If you are refering to Road's 60/40 casing TEK, that's 60% verm. and 40% coir. Since then, it has been suggested to me by some of the more experienced growers that since coir drys out so quickly that you could add a little more verm.

Maybe you should just read. I said you weren't suppose to colonize your CASING layer 100%. Of course you colonize your substrate 100%. But this thread is about his casing layer. Also, didn't know you could distinguish between bulk and plain casing's just by if it's wrapped in plastic or aluminum foil.

I am not referring to anything on this site. I have not taken the time to read any teks from this site, therefore, I am putting my input down right now from my experience. I know coir dries out more than verm. that's why I mentioned not to use 60/40. I keep my humidity at a 93 and I am fine. I guess from my experience, I STILL don't know shit. Peace, Love, and skills, Grow.
