What makes a casing contaminate?
    #4067904 - 04/18/05 06:44 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Since the casing layer is supposed to be non-nutritious, I wonder what are the contaminant vectors on it.

I can understand that putting egg shells in my casing mix provides some nutes, but just vermiculite? Are contams feeding on Myc? And if so, how come, wouldn't myc fight it?

Just a few things I was curious about, thanks for your time

I believe most casing layers are very slightly nutritious, so there is just enough for them to feed off of. Also it seems like they could take nutrients from your substrate and then work their way through the casing layer.

But how could they feed from the substrate if it's already colonized? I'm searching for an answer in TMC but yet to no avail...

Here this is taken from http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23418
the contamination guide here at the shroomery.

"In sawdust bags, contamination usually involves another fungus living off the waste products or on the remains of the cultivated fungus, or sometimes on the living mycelium or fruiting body of the cultivated fungus. The only competition for these contaminants is the cultivated fungus itself"

Cobweb isnt a huge deal in my opinion. Ive found that the h2o2 method works pretty well to get rid of it. Not sure if this is true, but for some reason i remember reading that stagnant air is a factor in cobweb mold. So maybe your not giving them enough air exchange.
