What's the problem with popped WBS?
    #4066466 - 04/17/05 09:57 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I've looked around quite a bit for the answer to this one, but while it's totally probable this question has been answered somewhere, it's not such a basic question that I feel uncomfortable asking it. What exactly is the problem with WBS that's popped/oversimmered? In what way does this cause problems, and is it a *major* issue, or is it just generally better if the kernels are unpopped?

By the way, I've just had my first successful grow, with my first mushrooms ever popping up out of my casing like crazy. Pics to follow. Thanks for all the help. You guys are amazing!

oversimmering causes too high water content. Making contams more likely

When wbs burst's, it emits starch, which makes sludge inside a jar, or bag. The sludge is prone to bacterial contamination, is sticky, making jars hard to shake. And, as the poster above rightly states, it is a sign of excess moisture content, which can cause problems in colonization.

Sort of a WBS simmer rule of thumb is, you have the moisture content right, if less than 1% burst.

I don't simmer WBS at all. Just a long soak - period.

No special amount. I just add nute hydrated chunky vern until the consistanct FEELS RIGHT.... loamy/fiber like & go with that. Not a SOGGY thing. You just have to learn what FEELS good to you & go with it. Once you know the feel/look, you will not forget it.
