in attempt to streamline my production of eddible legal mushrooms, i want to use tupperware containers, ~5"x5"x3"deep
in place of bell jars to make large colonized cakes that i will then break up into a pan and case.
i autoclaved the rubbermaid cause it's supposed to be able to take the heat, but the pressure did it in.
so i put the substrate that had already been autoclaved into the rubbermaid containers and then microwaved for about 10min each, had to leave a corner unsealed so that it wouldn't explode.
just about everyone i did got contaminated.
what should i do in the future?
also, could i use microwaveable, disposable zip-lock bags, sterilize the substrate, innoculate by slightly opening the seal, innoculating with syringe, then closing?
thanks

Katie,
I have never had a problem with contam with the microwave. I use tupperware and pyrex. 8 min on high. I use verm with BRF and a layer of dry verm on top. I then use the oven tek to inoculate.
What was your substrate?
Did the substrate contam, or the casings?
How did you inoculate the substrate?
What percautions did you take while inoculating?
<<also, could i use microwaveable, disposable zip-lock bags, sterilize the substrate, innoculate by slightly opening the seal, innoculating with syringe, then closing? >>
Yes, that could work.

I'm on my first attempt with the microwave tek and have found that so far putting a layer of saran wrap over the Rubbermaid container, poking tiny hole in the middle of the wrap, and lightly putting the cover on top has been fairly effective. Nuke for eight minutes. I've had one contam out of six containers 2.5 weeks later.
