hello shroomers! I have made some prints and am going to syringe them up soon, but I have one question first. How important is the pH of the water being used to make the syringes. I am thinking a neutral 7 would be good, is this OK?Also should I steer clear of using tap water, as I know most of out PWS have all kinds of crap in them. I do have access to MS (microbiologically suitable water) that is in a pH range 0f 7.0 to 7.4 with a conductance of less than 2.0 umhoms. I am sure that the MS water will be much more suitable than tap water. What does everyone think? or

Depends on your water quality that you have on tap.
Bottled water works. Sterile water works. Distilled water works. Mineral water works. Some Lake water will work. Some Well water will work. Some Spring water will work.
You are looking for chemical free water...not so much the ph factor.

thanks roadkill! So if I use the MS water should I still sterilize it even though it goes through a UV light filter?

I sterilize all my syringe making water.

Another quick one, can I just skip the syringe and directly inoculate to a bulk substrate or liquid medium after mixing the print with H2O? I want to try and get away from cakes if possible or should they still be made then cased?

There is no need to use a syringe specifically, but you should allow the spores to re-hydrate before inoculation. Leave the spore solution for at least 24 hours before inoculation. Inoculating a bulk substrate directly will be unsuccessful. You can add your spore solution to a liquid medium without a syringe, but you'll still need to grow out the mycelium on a conventional substrate before spawning to something like straw.

cool Odium, thanks for the bit! Which is prefered, BRF or WBS as substrate before spawning to compost and poo or another substrate.

There is no categorical answer to that question, it's a matter of personal preference. Many argue that WBS is easier to break up and has greater resistance to contamination, seeing as it's a less refined substrate. Personally, I prefer using a BRF/verm (PF) substrate, as I find it easier to cultivate, and convenient to spawn with. I simply grate up a block of PF substrate using a clean cheesegrater, and use the grated substrate as spawn.
However, as I said, it's a matter of preference, so experiment.
Good luck!
