Casing Question
    #4064968 - 04/17/05 10:09 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I just cased 4 more cases Rye Colonized to straw cased with verm and coir. I cased them last night and they are now covered with plastic wrap and ready to colonize more.

Here is my question do I cover these with plastic wrap or do I leave them open for air exchange, I usually cover them with plastic wrap wait until I see pins them put them into the fruiting chamber, but i have had bad luck with contamination so I'm wondering if this is where my step goes wrong.

What is the normal practice at this stage?

thanks

Cover in saran wrap, let mycellium colonize casing layer, then initiate fruiting conditions.

After casing, cover it up for about 2-3 days. Once you see some myc. popin up, then it's time to drop your temp to 73F and start fruiting.

how much time elapsed between the time that you spawned it to the straw, and when you cased it?

you will find contamination to be a problem with straw.
it's going to be a fact of life.
You will have much less of a problem when working with

That is terrible advice for a Verm/Coco Coir casing layer!~

Never let it go for 2 or 3 days!!!

That would be too long.

---

Cover it with plastic or Alum foil.

Check the casing layer every 6 to 8 hours...if you don't...you will have mycelium coming through your casing layer way too much.

As soon as the mycelium is just starting to come to the surface of the casing layer...put it in the fruiting chamber or cold shock it, then fruit it.

It's been two weeks since the straw has been spawn and when i transferred it to the final case it was fully colonized and visually looked free from contaminates, my only problem is my spawed straw is only 2 inches deep. My casing layer is about 2/3 inch deep, so it's likely that I won't see the mycelium pop through for about 2-4 days.

That's much different then my normal practice, I used to wait 2-3 days puncture holes in the plastic wrap then wait until pins developed from there I'd put it in the chamber. Mind you my cases always turned out under par and took roughly 2-3 weeks to develop shrooms.

Thanks for the advice, so is waiting 2-4 days to visually see the mycelium come through too long?

You should be using more!~

You will get much larger, better looking mushrooms if you used 4" to 6" of substrate(in your case straw).

I don't like using just straw...as a substrate.
Usually only get one or two good flushes...if that.

Try using some horse poo.
You will love it!~

this casings are already done but I got another big container 6" deep that I'm going to spawn within the week, I was going to use pure straw then case with either verm or coir or a mix of both depenign on the results from the previous experiment. Shoudl I be adding some poo to the straw for this next project?

i have a question, if i use coco coir in my casing, does the mycellium grow on top of the coco coir? and if it does, why cant i just take the the huge case and break it up and make even more cases with it, is that possible?

If you want some larger, more potent fruit...yes you should.

Magic 8 ball says!: "NO"

Store bought manure has been proven to be basically useless for mushroom cultivation... Sorry bro, GL though :stoned:

some work some don't...you have to decide.

I'd use aged horse poo from a farm...have one near you?
You would pastuerize some aged horse poo and use that or add it to your straw.

errr...once i've got mycelium coming thru the casing, and have cold shocked it, what do you mean by "then fruit it"? and should i keep misting the terrarium? or do i have to do it indirectly to protect the mycelium?

"fruit it" means expose to light & fresh air exchange - with rh @ 85+

ah, gotcha. i've been doing the air exchange for about 5 days now, and my tubs are on shelves where they get both diffused natural and incandescent light...is this sufficient?
