drying cactus
    #4060515 - 04/15/05 08:13 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

I've got 2 feet of cactus sliced up and I'm trying to dry it out. I put it in the oven on low temp for a few hours, they just seemed to get soggier. Right now I've got them in a sealed rubbermaid with a dish of damprid.

How long does cactus take to dry out? And is there a better way I should be doing this? I'm trying to store it away for future use...

Oven, fine star-like slices, 60-80?C.
It may become soggier at first but it will dry eventually.

I believe damp-rid is not going to dry it before it molds/rottens.

Aww, i hope your cactus doesn't rot. How do you prepare dried cacti? Do you boil it a bit, then blend it, then reboil it down to a drinkable amount (hard to say what a drinkable amount is  )

okay. If it's going to take a week then I'm not worried at all. I unsealed the container, and have the soggier peices on a screen on top of the container while the normal peices are below next to two dishes of damprid and a bunch of paper towels. Most of the peices are doing really well. In the oven the skins started to turn a dull brownish color. I don't know if this is good or bad, but I'd rather avoid it if I can.

I haven't decided what I'm going to do with it, but I know I want to save it for later. I might make an extraction out of it all. I've got all the equipment, so I might as well!

I saved about six inches so I can grow some more. This cactus is a panachoi. I've already got a peruvianus growing, which is supposed to be more potent than the panachoi, so I'm not all that concerned with growing more out, but I figure it couldn't hurt to have more cactus!

I haven't tried any san pedro yet. But I can't wait! I'll probably try it by the end of the summer.

it's okay, cuz I'm gonna have a peruvianus and a panachoi both growing. I'd rather just have the cactus dry and ready to travel or grind or boil or anything else. It's good to know that I have some "on hand".
