Help with identification please :)
    #4058798 - 04/15/05 12:25 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

Good afternoon,

I was hoping that someone could help me identify this white stuff that was growing on a fallen tree behind my house. I thought it was fungus or lichen, but I havne't been able to identify it exactly. If I am not posting in the appropriate place, or the wrong forum entirely, I apologize. Any help is greatly appreciated!

picture for identification

Thanks,
Danielle

That's kinda cool looking, unfortunately I have no clue what they are. Looks sort of like oyster mushrooms  anyways here is a link that might help you out www.mykoweb.com

Welcome to the Shroomery botanystudent.

That is a lichen. Sorry, I don't ID lichens to species.

As I'm sure you know, a lichen is actually a pair of symbiotic species, one fungus and the other alga. The fungus provides the alga with water and protection, and the alga provides the fungus with sugar from photosynthesis.

Symbiosis is pretty awesome.

On a side note, Alexander Shulgin manufactured THC by combining the extract of a lichen with one of the essential oils in an orange peel.

So, if i have to list a picture of a fungus and a lichen for my class, then this should go under lichen, not fungus??

Thanks for your help!

Yes, is should go under lichen. Sorry for complicating things. Taxonomy is not an exact science.

Thank you.  I had a few lichens already, and no fungus, I haven't been able to find any in the woods or in the yard.  I guess I will have to go take a picture of some mushrooms in the grocery store!

Thank you.  THere has to be some around here somewhere.  I live in Maryland, where is the best place to look, like near a pond, or in the woods?

Thanks again!

Its been too dry for most shrooms.

This is what I have found so far this year.

[Gyromitra gigas, Snow Bank False Morel]

[Sacroscypha coccinea, Scarlet Cup]

[Urnula craterium, Devil's Urn]

Any of these could be found in the forests of Maryland this time of year.
