just found a great deal on Eucalyptus and was wondering if it would work for wood loving species like azures, cyan, shiitake

I would use caution using Eucalyptus except for varieties known to fruit upon it. StametsIor Aurora report toxicity in some edibles grown on Eucalyptus.
Perhaps some australian species would be best suited to this substrate. Ps. eucalypta(sp?) or perhaps some varieties of subaruginosa fruit natively off of it. I would ask Bluemeanie.

Something I recently tried and it worked for reishi is birch plywood. Cut the plywood into 1" strips, then bang with a hammer to break up slightly. Soak for three days in water, then inoculate. You can get plywood just about anywhere.

Cyans will grow out on Eucalyptus bark.
At one point eucalyptus was said to be dangerous for edibles,
but today it's considered a safe substrate.

Cyans like Eucalyptus better than aspen and douglas fir,
but it is not as good as alder for creating wood chip spawn.
Some nice rhizos formed on the Euc bark after a soak and PC.

RR, nice idea about breaking up birch plywood!

Stamets comment held up the serious investigation of Eucalyptus for many years
apparently it was an anecdotal report via David arora later retracted and signed off as an isolated incident

meanwhile they grow shiitake on Eucalyptus commercially in brazil - maybe GGMM wasnt translated to portuguese?

This should be a lesson to everyone, especially those whove read all the books - that none of it is gospel.

Eucalyptus is great

Its worked well for
Shiitake, Azures, Subaeruginosa, P ostreatus, P pulmonarius, Reishi, Agrocybe, Wood ear, P djamor, Golden oyster, Enoki.

Not well for

IMHO, I wouldn't use plywood unless you want urea-formaldehyde in your mushrooms. It's an insustry standard and is used in the making of all plywoods unless stated it's stated as "formaldehyde free". Cabinet grade birch, baltic birch, they all have chemicals in them. Not to mention you never know which wood species they're using for in between plys. They use whatever is cheap and available.

Bluemeanie
its not cold enough here for fruiting but the local hardwood sustained good mycelial growth

wher its failed i think 3 things need to be ascertained befeore writing off euc and that species
1) Is it just a mater of isolate?
2) Is it a matter of supplement?
3) Is there a problem with water content

the biggest prob with euc sawdust is water repellancy IME
i think if it was short composted with alittle urea and gypsum that might fix it a bit
As for supplements not many species went crazy on straight sawdust of any kind. it seems eucalypts need a little more than decisuous hardwwods - like pine does
and for the isloates i did a trial run using about 1/2 of the species i have on Euc sawdust extract agar
I boiled sawdust till a strong tea was amde and strained then mad eup to 2.5% malt adjusted pH and added agar
To these plates i added a wedge of diff isolates
amongst diff strain within a species there was signifcant variation in the speed of colonisation
luckily for me its easy to see fungal activity in thsi experiment both as myc growth and the exuding of extracellular enzymes that destroy the pigmnets in the wood tea leaving clear zones

Mt later growout trials were nowhere as extensive but what was done did seem to correlate with this earlier trial.
