Casing: Buffering, and other questions
    #4060716 - 04/15/05 11:38 PM (16 years, 24 days ago)

I'm having a little trouble finding crushed oyster shells in my area, and am tired of paying shipping costs from ordering on the internet. Have any of you had success using Gypsum as a buffer instead of Oyster Shells in Peat-based casing?

So, we're looking at a combination of:

Peat
Verm
Hydrated Lime
Gypsum

What thinketh you expert casers out there?

gypsum is not a buffer. It does not significantly affect pH. It is used to ease grain separation in spawn generation and to add a touch of calcium for some wood-loving species.

I have used it as such, but have also read, after doing a search on this site, that it can be used as a buffer, in addition to lime.

Ok.. Wait a second...

Looking in Stamets' second bible of cultivation, he gives a formula for casing as:

10 parts peat
1 part gypsum
1 part chalk

But, he states that Gypsum affects the pH insignificantly, and that its main function is to add a bit of calcium and other mineral salts which are essential in many mushroom metabolic processes...

So, that supports what you have said, Blue, about it not affecting pH too much.

FYI, here is a good post on lime:
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/1041528/an/0/page/0

Now my question becomes why do many folks recommend using hydrated lime? Seems like NOT the best option to change pH...

Hydrated lime, as in calcium hydroxide, is not a good buffer. It is very strong which makes it hard to apply correctly without a probe. Once you put it on, it quickly loses it's potency by reacting with CO2 in the air and turning into calcium carbonate. Then you end up not having enough buffer because you don't have enough calcium carbonate in the mix. It's great for pasteurization of straw in a bath of the straw, but it's not that great as a casing buffer.

Check your local feedstores for crushed oyster shells. If you live in a rural area, or close to a rural area, they should be easy to find. If you live in a big city, Petsmart and Petco will have them for birds. The crushed oyster shells sold in feedstores are for chickens.

Good luck.
