Okay, just was gathering some up.... Of course, no smell whatsoever. Seems 100% dry.
Only question is: some of the pieces look identical in color to wheat straw... I'm assuming this is a good thing.
Other pieces have a greenish color to the "straw" looking insides. Looking around the stables where the horses are it looks like they feed them a lot of green "straw" (hay, perhaps?)...
I'm gonna start soaking it anyways....but just checking before I started gathering pounds and pounds and pounds.
Thanks, let me know if any other pics would help....

Oh, yeah, I was gonna mention...it's crazy how it REALLY doesn't smell at all. When breaking it up with my latex covered hands, and smelling handfuls, I could smell the latex but not the poo.
I really recommend anyone: just do bulk and use h/poo, it's like having pre-shredded, contam-free (well almost), straw with lots of extra nutes.
Can't wait to see the results.

pleco, I live in a country area.... my neighbors all around me have horses.
But I didn't really feel like disturbing people at home, so I just looked in the phone book for horse stables and boarding. It's a place where people just keep their horses when they don't have the land or energy to do it themselves.
Turns out there was one nearly 4 blocks from my house, that I knew about all along, it just never came to mind.... pretty convenient.
So, I went there, asked for some manure for my mom's garden, they laughed at me and said no problem.
Sent me to the stables area (the covered area where horses are kept) and showed me a big area where the poo was shoveled into to keep the area somewhat clean. But all this stuff was WAY WAY WAY to fresh.
I nearly passed out after breaking open a couple nuggets to smell. And it had sawdust mixed in because sawdust was used to cover the stable area floor, to soak up the urine I imagine. Pretty nasty.
So, I started walking around and couldn't find the owner again to ask if I could go out in this field, turns out it was the riding stable area so they kept it pretty clean... all the poo was regularly removed. this is a business after all.
It was kinda slim pickins but next time there was a field where the horses graze that seems as though it is cleaned way less often.... that's where I'm gonna ask to go next time.
Just realize when you're there that the good poo almost looks like straw colored it is so weathered. Break open some nugs and whiff when you're collecting and they shouldn't smell at all. Whatever you do avoid collecting the poo out of the stables area as it was under an awning and stuff, so it never had a chance to weather.
and go find some poo, I think anyone can do it....just look in the phone book and starting calling around. even big cities have rich people who like horses and go someplace to keep them and ride them. just got to do it, cause i kept putting it off and putting it off, and now i'm wondering, "why didn't I do that 3 months ago...lol"
hope that helps mark

Dude, if ALL your neighbors have horses, whats the freaking problem? Call them, ask if you can raid their fields for an evening, get a huge amount of horse shit. If you don't think it's dry enough, get a black tarp and spread it all out on that for a nice hot day. Break up the nugs and they'll dry quicker (why does that sound familiar?:) ) I really want to re-state my position that most cubensis mushrooms are more genetically suited to decompose COW manure than they are to decompose horse manre. I think that the best combination is cow manure and grass clippings composted until it's black soil-looking material (with no shitty/ammonia smell), mixed with straw. If you do this once, you won't go back

Thanks Mark... my girl and I went driving to check out pastures but I didn't have the balls to hop a fence OR ask them if I can have some poop. I just might try to next time.

You guys really overdo the paranoia with collecting horse poo. You have better odds of winning the lottery or being stuck by lightning than having someone become suspicious of you taking manure off their hands.
Just go get it, you'll need some for your "tomato garden" this summer anyways

dude, it's horse shit. It's not asking to buy 50 gallons of diethylamine, it's HORSE SHIT. "I have a garden and I need some manure, mind if I swing by every so often and take some" It's that easy.

Just picked up a bunch similar to this from a friend who owns a horse.
I'm wondering is there a difference between the pieces that are really dark inside and out and the pieces and MM mentions that are brown on the outside, but kinda green on the inside?
Does the kinda green on the inside but brown on the outside mean it is aged enough? Should it just be left in a pile to age? or should the pieces be broken up and left to age?

ok, I understand aging works either in a pile or broken up, but what I haven't seen answered, or I'm missing the answer, is can the brown outside kinda green inside be used? or should it be aged longer?

it can be used no problem....as long as it doesn't smell. It just seems more likely it will smell if it is dark on the outside, in my limited experience. I had a few nugs that were dark on the outside and green on the inside. But the really aged stuff is almost straw colored, although slightly green on the inside.
(wow, all this analysis of shit....but it really pays off)
But just go get some and let it soak....if it doesn't smell then your good to go.
if it does smell (hopefully only VERY slightly, not reeking up your whole house by ANY means, unless the smell doesn't bother you ) just soak for 24 hours then rinse in collander like so:
squeeze til appropriate moisture content and pastuerize. I was SHOCKED at really how simple it was...
Oh yeah.... and about all my neighbors having poo.... It's not about them being suspicious about what you need manure for. Cause like Diver kinda said... no one in their right mind is EVER going to guess that you're growing mushrooms, and illegal ones at that. And it's not like they have your name or something anyways...
It's just about being polite and not going up to a random person's door and bothering them in their own home...jehovah witness style.
I would be feel slightly invaded if someone came up to my house and bothered me....but I'm kinda a dick i guess. lol... No, only kidding but it just seems better to go to a business if possible...if that's not easy...do what you got to do. Very few people would really mind if you bothered them at home. But just being polite.
Oh, and about spreading it out on a tarp to dry....etc.etc. I live in an apartment, so that's why getting it as close to ready as possible is so important.
Thanks, and my poo is in the oven as we speak....tomorrow i'm going out for the big haul. At least a 30 gallon rubbermaid full.
