My first casing is underway! I'm so excited!
    #4060958 - 04/15/05 10:57 PM (19 years, 5 days ago)

OK, so i did my first casing today! it was in a 13Lx9Wx4H Sterilite container and i put a very minimal amount of my casing layer on the bottom of the container, so little that you can see the plastic in many spots... then i put 4 1/2 pints of colonized PESH WBS that were done w/ a coffee soak and then simmered. anywayz, i then put a casing layer over the WBS. the WBS is about 2-3" deep and the casing layer is about 3/4" deep. i kinda raked the top of the casing like it was plowed w/ a mini-tractor...lol anyways, my casing layer was kinda a spur of the moment job that i could have done much better but i didn't know i was low on supplies... i had plenty of coco coir and not too much verm. so i soaked the coco coir in boiling water that i let cool down a little from boiling, then added about 2 cups of verm, and i heard that ground egg shell is a fairly decent PH buffer for spur of the moment jobs.. so i added 1 ground egg shell. well, in the end i had a great feeling casing. i had to add some water to make it optimum, but it feels good in my hand.  well, like i said, it's my first time casing, and unfortunately it was too spontaneous for my likings, but i feel really good about how everything turned out. could anyone tell me if I'm OK as far as the ingredients of my casing layer? not sure of the egg thing, but i hope it's OK. also, i took some 100% silicone adhesive and made a tyvek filtered lid from the original lid, just cut holes and stuck the tyvek over the holes.. when i finished putting everything in the tray i misted the top pretty good, but i didn't over saturate it. another thing that is important but I'm unsure of is, i incubate my jars and bags at 86% on the dot, day and night in a closet w/ no light. but at what temp should i fruit? i can achieve any temp and keep it there, just i hear some people say different temps for fruiting, but what is it? are there different temps for pinning and fruiting? i know that's a lot but i hope someone can tell me if I'm OK w/ my casing and help me w/ my questions... many thanx shroomery friends!

p.s. I'll post pix just as soon as something exciting is happening w/ it.

damn, i just looked up there, i wrote a lot of shit! i'll try and keep it shorter next time...

Hey, sounds good. You probably didn't need the eggshell as coir and verm casing doesn't require ph adjusting. It won't hurt anything though. A 10 degree drop in temp. is required to initiate pinning. If you're incubating at 86, then you need to fruit at no more than 76. Good Luck. Make sure you have good gas exchange and not too much moisture. Want to keep that cob web away.

sounds good. i think the important thing with fruiting is that the temp. drops 10 deg. so 76 deg. should do it.

thanx a lot, is a cold shock needed? i mean more than 10 deg drop? and also, should i leave the temp at 76 the whole time i'm fruiting or just during pinning? again, thanx!

Not really. The 10 degree drop is like the cold shock. Some people like to cold shock to make sure the mycelium get the message. I would leave the temp. at 76,74 if possible, the whole time. You can, however, increase the humidity until you see pins. Good Luck.
