Alleviating Depression

I was sitting the past few minutes trying to think of how I could alter this to be an all-encompassing topic seeing how there are probably a buttload of people on here struggling with depression, but I failed. I haven't posted on here in a while because I lost the will for some reason.

Well basically I've been struggling with fucking retarded depression for longer than I actually know. I don't know why, but atleast 98% of my life, I feel like fucking shit. There's no blatently obvious cause of this to me seeing how there have been no family/friend deaths recently, I haven't used ANY psychoactive recreational drug since November, my family life is fine, and et cetera.
Also:
-I've seen a psychiatrist before who was no help.
-I've tried months of SSRIs only to be left feeling worse than before I started.
-I take St. John's Wort but it doesn't even have a placebo effect... nor ANY effect that I know of.
-My social life is somewhat crappy, but I've been giving a lot of effort to improve it by getting rid of "friends" and meeting new people and/or spending time with relationships that are healthier.
-I get PLENTY of exercise... walk/jog/run for atleast an hour a day... work out 3-5 times a week.
-While I don't eat as well as I could, I eat more healthy than 90% of the other American scum out there. I eat 5 varying fruits a day, and 2-3 vegetable servings.
-I consistently think about suicide and death, but I don't want to die, so no worries.
-I stopped listening to depressing music.

There you go; that seems to be all the pertinent information that I'm comfortable with giving. I try my hardest every day not to be a prisoner to this state of mind by accomplishing the above, but regardless of my actions I'm still depressed and have no interest in life.

I hate making these damn selfish topics, but the only person I've ever spoken to offline that can relate is seemingly impossible to reach. All of my friends are your generic Americans whose troubles are completely centered around relationships, college, money, jobs, self-image, et cetera, so it's not like I can turn to any of them.

Have you considered fish oil? I started taking Omega-3 fatty acids over a year ago and definitely saw a change. Fish oils seem to replenish some fatty acids in the brain that have a direct correlation to depression, state of mind, etc. It worked for me, or seemed to. I can usually tell the difference between placebo and genuine results, so to the best of my instincts I believe it works. St. Johns Wort is a farce in my opinion.

Also, weather is a major contributor. Do you like where the weather is shitty? I sink to below depressive states when the weather sucks. First sunny day and I'm back 110%, it rocks. More mysterious things with the brain, the sun provides some essential chemicals that if we don't get them, depression can and will wreak havoc. I have a lot of experience with this one. Living where the weather sucks 6 months out of the year has a MAJOR impact on my mental health, and I don't like one bit. This is fact, not placebo.

I actually have been taking Omega 3 Fatty Acids for about 5 months now. It doesn't really seem to do much for me mentally, but I continue to take it because I know it's healthy.

I don't think the weather has much relevance to the way I feel. I've read about the whole sun-therapy thing, and seasonal affective disorder and it doesn't seem to apply. I am glad that there's no more cold weather. Starting Tuesday, kick ass Spring weather has now come into play here in VA.

seed oil is not the same as fish oil
just so you know its something about long chain and short
long being easier for you to assimilate

eat wild salmon at least once a week

depression is like having a basement full of junk, everytime you need something you cant find it in the mess. Exercise food and meds wont do shit for the person unwilling to take out the trash that builds up over the years. Who knows whats waiting for you.
All the shit spans back to your child hood so get a hold of yourself, as you were, and find out whats important and should be kept...

Using Salvia a few times a week really helped relieve my depression. Even in non breakthrough doses.

I guess you could say that the opposite of depression is hope.

What kind of goals have you set for yourself and what are you doing to accomplish them?

im sad because no one likes me, ever, i havent made a friend in 10 years, and it makes me think i must be the most horrible worthless person in the world. and every day is bleak and hopeless, and i look forward to death. not that anyone cares anyway... ah well, peace out yall.

As far as depression and suicide goes;

I know there's nothing when I die. Conscious thought ceases to exist, as does memory and sense perception.

Call him God, find comfort in him, only to die and find nothing. I know this is a 'horrible' thing to say, but I bet the Pope is really disappointed right now.

So make the best of what you've got while you've still got it.

Duck, I know what that is like, I have no true friends at this point in my life... but I take it in strive because it is teaching me patience, and practice, because since I have no one to stand by everyone I meet by chance is giving me a look at who I think I am -> right NOW!
If I had a mess of chums to drink and party with, I would know my place and not even think about it this much... if I wanted that static feeling I would have gone for it, I don't blame myself... I acknowlege myself.

I hope John Paul may find peace now... everytime I see his face I can see the sadness he lived with...
imagine living out the last of your days away from your family, friends, and home... locked up and set up on the popal petistool of the vatican...
I don't worry if he is dissapointed now Where ever he is now that he is gone, because his body and anypart of him that could feel or think or belive is laying in a room somewhere with a group of men around him deciding the next step for his body.

give to a couple bucks to charity, do some charity work, its really good to know your doing something help animals/people have a better quality of life. you cant fix everything, just doing a part is greatly rewarding. find a cause that means something to you. you will feel much better about yourself, create purpose.

Yeah, I've done around 30 hours of charity work for Muscular Distrophy Association in the 6 months. The thing is, I don't get the satisfaction of helping people that most experience, nor do I wan't this satisfaction. To me, it seems that if you are doing the charity work because you enjoy the feeling of helping people, then you're motives are rather selfish. I think it's more honorable for a person who hates people and helping them to be doing the charity work.

Anyone have any suggestions for depression? *%(@!&)%(*!@&%(

Two recommendations:
1. Find a solid chiropractor and/or acupuncturist. You may discover more help and a friendly connection that you will imagine. You may not though, so use prudence.
2. Connect with the Above the best you can. He is kind, loving, compassionate, helpful, fair, and will probably show you things that keep you're life going.

Sorrow is a part of this time period. The future awaits though, and in this we have hope.

Depression is mainly triggered by negative thinking patterns. Your goal should be to demolish those negative thinking patterns and replace them with the positive ones. When ever you think negative immediately change it into a positive statement. Dont let your self say negative things as your mind will eventually believe it. Think positive no matter how hard it is and your mind WILL change! Its not easy I know man but Its not like a snap on your fingers and its gone. Takes time. Also stay away from drugs they only make things worse.

Diver and p4KSoul have said some good things. I've suffered from depression and anxiety my whole life. The things I've found most help full are healthy diet (fruits and veggies), daily exersize, sun, Om3 fatty acids (fish oil, almonds, flax oil, hemp oil), vitamins/minerals (capsules, not tablets - buy good ones), ginkgo biloba, meditation (there are some really good empirical studies on the effects of meditation). Find out if you have allergies and stay away from allergens if possible. Surround yourself with people you love and trust who give back. I don't have many friends but my wife has been my best friend for years. Good relationships are important. Learn to nurture yourself. Learn to recognize self destructive behaviors and eliminate them or balance them. It was good for me to find a therapist that called me on my bullshit and self deceit. Don't settle for anything less than what you want unless it's a healthy compromise and don't let people run you over. Become assertive (not aggressive) and learn how to boost your self confidence. Don't let people's wants shape your needs and wants unless it's a healthy/balanced compromise. I know it sounds like a lot but it happens one step at a time and you have to start somewhere, anywhere! Most importantly, take care of yourself. I took meds for years and now I get by without them using the above. I'm not always disciplined but it helps to do as much as you can daily. Eventually it becomes second nature. You won't even have to think about it.

as far as helping depression i have a cup of sleepy time tea with Valerian root in it. it seems to make me chill out.

I've stopped using Salvia for depression a while ago because I was feeling OK again. And I'm still feeling fine also my desire for Salvia has gone. But it will come back, it always does  :grin:

Sorry to drag up an old topic, this time last year i was in the pits of depression. I am well on the way to recovery. All i have done is had a new change of life, got a new job, got a nice girl and generally improved my quality of life. One thing looking back on it all that didn't help was sitting around thinking about ways to get better, you jsut got to get some motivation and get out their and defeat it, face your troubles and your worries and realise they really aren't anything in the big scheme of things.

I know it ain't easy but you just got to get off your butt and beat it on the head :P
