Steamed w/ Rice cooker: UPDATE w. Pics, Early pinners too...
    #4057265 - 04/15/05 12:19 AM (18 years, 11 months ago)

Hey,

Here is a link to the original thread: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/3864791/page//fpart/1/vc/1

About a month ago I used this site with some questions regarding if a Rice cooker would suffice for the PF Tek, well, I innoced all 10 of my jars (including a few cracked ones) and all of them are colonizing, they are moving really slow and I was wondering if there was anything I could do to speed them.

2 Jars have began pinning a little early, they aren't all the way colonized but they are both pinning visably. I think our substrate was a bit off ratio. Check my pix and gimme any pointers.

Heres a Cracked Jar:

Heres one of the pinners:

Here is the same jar on the other side:

Still not quite done....

Thanks,

Mpizzle

Pint jars don't do any justice for PF Tek, i've said it over and over again they run out of O2 before they can fully colonize quickly.

Either wait it out or birth now, cut out uncolonized parts.

Id wait, let the shrooms mature in the jar (invitro) and then by the time they're mature, the cakes should be done...break them up, harvest, and case. Just me..

Now that someone has mentioned something, these do look like 1 pint jars. I could swear I bought 1/2's.....

Well, what to do, guess I'm probably going to end up cutting off the portions of the cake that ARE ready and casing them.

I dont understand how then, the formula for the jars worked, we did the math, made enough substrate for 12 jars with the following formula and then had exactly enough for 12....We must have done VERY bad math.

For one ? pint jar(~240 ml) you will need:
=> 140 ml vermiculite
=> 40 ml brown rice flour
=> some vermiculite to fill the jar to the top (app. 20 ml)
=> water

cakes run out of o2? Hmm, Kronny come on now.
As for those jars, the pics suck but they look contamed. When a jar fails to go rhizomorphic and stops like they did it usually means the mycel came in contack with a contam.

I dont see any contams man. Have you tried taking the tape off and turning upside down???

Not necessarily...A foaf brought me some cakes that had a bit more colonizing to do...He said that he saw no contams and that they' were beautifully white....I looked at them and laughed...They had Primordial knots everywhere....He had either looked at them too much or allowed a bit of light in the TiT everyday....

Maybe you have the same thing going?

So by looking at them too much you can increase your chances of getting a contam? I think the same thing happened to my jars and I had half-pint jars...two of the cakes cracked and the three that I thought were "fully colonized" had to be dumped because the verm. layer on top had green growing on it (which smoked at me when i scraped it...it was naturally saying "I got your cake MUJAJAJAJA" :-\

Not necessarily? You fail to contradict my statement. Please explain. :wink:

I don't believe the cakes are conataminated, they look nice and clean white, but they have just stopped. I havn't tried flipping them upside down yet, but I think that might be a good thing to try next.

If you have tape covering the inoculation points on the lid...pull the tape off.

If you have alum foil covering the top of the lids...pull the alum foil off.

Then flip your jars.
