I just tried for the first time the other day, but so far I've only been taking small doses. I have what I think is a lot of Salvia but I don't how it compares to the normal amount people get when they buy it. Its a mixture of leaves and maybe some extract. I want to bring it back as a gift for my friend but I know that if I find it in my bags when I reach America, I'll have to go through a bunch of shit. They might search my bags, because even going in to Mexico they searched 1/3 of the people.
How would I go about smuggling the salvia through the airlines?

I know, but either way if they find it in my bags, I will have to go through so much crap. I'm pretty sure if they find it, I won't be able to say, "Oh it's just salvia," and then they'll let me through with it. Won't they want to check to see what it is through some fancy ass equipment, while I have to go through questioning by the police? I wouldn't know, I don't even know what drugs are.

The friend who I am getting it for told me to get a bottle of shampoo and drain out all the shampoo, wash it out, and let it dry. Then dump all of the contents of the bag into it.

You could do that.
if you wanted to be really secure you could put it in a zip lock bag, put it in the shampoo bottle, then fill the top up with shampoo... but I think that's a bit overkill for something that is legal.

Well, the fact is that even though legal, they'll still give you a bunch of shit for it. I mean, customs probably aren't in the habit of trusting people. If they find it and they simply accept: "it's legal get off my case" on the way back load your suitcase full of cocaine but label if with "flour" and give them the same line.
Like everyone said, you won't get in trouble but you'll probably have an enormous hassle on your hands (e.g. once they hold you for 10 hours waiting to get it tested you'll probably miss a flight).
Perhaps you could simply mail it?

Yeah that's kind of what I was worried about, but hopefully it'll all go down smoothly.
As of mailing it, although its a good idea, I don't live in my own house yet and my parents would get it before I do. And my dad would have smoked the entire bag by the time I arrive home.

so...
you want to bring dried salvia foliage (maybe with some extract added) from mexico into the unites states...
did you grow or pick this herb yourself? or did you purchase it in mexico?
or is it some more-or-less commecially available Salvia divinorum stuff you bought somewhwere?
it is legal (except in australia) - so just shove a gram or 2 of 20X into a paper-fold & put it in with your credit cards or folding money - 2 grams isn't very large, but 2 grams of 20X is a considerable number of salvia experiences...
but if you are worried, why don't you just buy some on the internet & have it sent to them? or just send your friends some money & have them buy it off the internet? or would that spoil the "surprise"?
(or you could just put it in a test tube & label it "DANGER! ANTHRAX!" --- the airport security folks just love little jokes like that... hell, you could even put it in a spice jar & label it "sage", right?)
