How to get 7 PH?
    #4058283 - 04/15/05 12:19 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I'm planning to make a casing from verm(50)/garden peat(50). I know the peat has a PH value of 4 PH. I have vegetable garden lime, how much should I add to make the PH value 7? And can I overdo the amount of lime? If heard that for garden use you add 7KG to 1000L of garden peat to make it neutral(7PH). So that would be 1.75g with 250ml of peat is that OK, or should I add more?

Thnx for all the replies!

peat could vary from 4 (maybe 3?)-7...and hydrated lime will act quickly and you can raise the pH to much. And since 4 is 10,000 times more acidic then 7..you want to get it right. You can guesstimate (there are teks listed in the FAQ) or you can go out and get some pH test strips (or a meter) and get it exact.

Best to add some powdered limestone (or eqivilant) for long term buffer too. Harder to add to much of that, but about 5%.

All the info I got for you, good luck!

In the store where I got the peat, they tolled it was around 4 pH. So should I use 1.75 grams?

Do you trust the clerk who told you that?

A pH tester is what I trust. You can get a ph probe cheap at HomeDepot, Lowes, WalMart, etc.
