Hey good luck man. Definitlely not a decision that I would make for my life, but you are brave for doing so knowing that you will most likely be put in harms way.

there are certain exceptions. I was going to be in the NAVY performing band, but couldnt pass the physical because of mental problems Had I passed the mental exam I would have gone straight to my post because there was an immediate opening in a band. Automatic staff sergant rack as well.

Just because you dont kill yourself does not at all mean that you will not be a critical contributing part of a system that does like clockwork. the carburator in a car never touches the road but is still a critical part in helping it move if you can feel my admitidly weak analogy. Whatever your intentions and motivations though, I can't imagine they are wicked in origin, although I do feel you are devoting a part of your life to a wicked cause. I don't, however, imagine you feel this way, and given this I do wish you the best, and hope all goes well for you. And may you learn a great deal from this experience and gain as much wisdom as possible. In a faint way there is a fealing of envy on my part, simply because I know that by going through this you will learn and experience precious leasons from life that I shall never know. You are obviously a strong spirit, and again, I do wish you the best.

I was in the army for approximately 3 months when I was 17. (Yes, 17). Me and the Army decided after that time that I was incompatible w/ military service (Go figure).
I went through orientation and 7 weeks of basic at Fort Jackson outside Columbia, SC. Feel free to PM me and ask me any specific questions you have. DONT TRUST YOUR RECRUITER. I guarantee you that he is a lying, scheming piece of shit. No Joke. Double check ANYTHING he tells you. Including pay, MOS, all that shit. He will lie to you to get his paycheck.
But yeah, PM me or post whatever you need to know and I'll help you out.

Congratulations on joining the military and good luck. I am maybe thinking about joining myself (I am unsure as to what I will do in the coming years). Strangely, the thought of combat does not scare me. But, the thought of being treated like a child by superior officers does scare me.
Before you sign up, get everything your recruiter told you in writing. They flat out lie to you to get you to sign up. Have anything looked over by an independent lawyer. My aunt signed up (for the Army) and had everything put in writing. When the Army didn't live up to its obligations, she was able to get out.

well, have fun with that...
[no flaming]...
(yes i know, i shouldn't flame and should instead explain my position... but i have to go to class in a few minutes, and don't really care to spend my time explaining why supporting keynesian militarization of the american economy is a very bad idea - not to mention the fact that it is simply absurd that education in america costs anything, let alone so fucking much, that people have to sign their lives away to pay for it. i hope you don't get killed and actually get to use the money that you are promised. and i'm fucking pissed that my tax dollars go to that - instead of just going to making education affordable in the first place. gah.)

Right on, man, I'm former army myself. Good luck in basic, some camps are going to be more of a pain in the ass, esp. benning or knox, while jackson is pretty laid back, from what I've heard. That being said, you should probably hope for a tough camp, which will prepare you better for the middle east. At basic, just do what the drills say, don't take on extra responsibility if possible, but be sure not to stand out negatively. It sucks to be marked as weak link, and it's worse to be singled out as the fuckup. The drills are going to be all crazy on you for a few weeks, but by a combination of their getting used to you and your advancement through successive phases of training they'll ease up. Inprocessing, the first few days, is probably the worst part, so just hang in there the first few days. Good luck man, and stay safe wherever you are deployed.

I think the military is great as long as you don't let it dictate your political/moral beliefs. Good luck in basic training, it'll make you a better person-- be it physically or mentally.

My sentiments exactly.
You'll probably have a hell of a time. Hunter S. Thompson "joined" (judge gave him the option of punishment or military) the Air Force, and said it was the most exciting time of his life.
Maynard from Tool also was in the army, and says much of his experiences from noticing the mindless idiot-sheep in there contribute to his songs.
