Well, I am still waiting on the spores. This is going to be my first grow. I have a little problem, no preassure cooker. So, I was doing some brain storming and thought of baking the vermiculite before mixing it up with BRF and boiling the jars (to decrease contam chances of course). Now, here is the question...can I bake my brown rice flour? Will the heat do any demage to the nutritional value of the BRF? Your opinion matters to me, alot

don't brain storm yet...stick to a proven TEK.
you don't have a pressure cooker...stick to the PF Tek.
boil your jars with the substrate in the jars.
PF Tek....click here!~
take care!~

hey.. Plutonium. Trust him on this. Imitate, assimilate , innovate.
Your not ready. Just duplicate the tek exactly. If you can't resist experementing , do the tek AND the expierement seperately.
But really. DO WHAT THE MAN SAYS.

I do not know of anyone myself that doesn't brainstorm or try to improve their grows. All the dozens of methods of growing are the results of brainstorming and trial/error.
If you READ the information on this site you would know how to use your oven or your stove to do your PF jars. The teks are right there. Those ideas HAVE been thought of and used by many. Results of experimenting.
You can't improve something if you don't know how it works or what its doing, or if you have nothing to improve.

OK...you guys are getting me totally wrong. I've been reading for a while..I've looked through all the teks, and feel pretty confident about the amount of knowledge I possess.
all i want to know is...
If I bake my rice flour, will the heat do any damage to the nutritional value?
Please...

I'm not trying to hold you back.
If you want to experiment...be my guest.
I love to experiment with things myself.
But remember this...when you experiment you take a good chance of having failures. Are you ready for some failures?
I'm here to help people become sucessful in mycology...I meant you no disrespect.
good luck!~

There is no reason to bake your rice flour.
What purpose would this have?

Thanks for being supportive RK. Well, there is a purpose to baking the rice flour. OK, this is what my experiment is...since I don't have a pressure cooker I do not want to take a chance with just boiling the jars. Before I mix the vermiculite and BRF I want to bake them for sterilization purposes. After baking the ingredients I plan to let them cool in a sterile environment and proceed to mixing the ingredients. After the mix has been made, and placed into the jars they will be boiled, again cooled and finally inoculated.
I know I am a n00b, and I know there are chances of failure, however I am also one of those people who does things a little differently...that's all. So please..don't flame me.

go to wal mart get a pressure cooker it will save you lots of contamed jars .. either that or you might dry the jars out causein stalled jars .. which isnt fun either pc is the way to go ..

The vermiculite and BRF will be baked dry.
Again, will the baking process do any damage to the nutritional value of BRF? hmm

You contaminate them when you mix them up. Air, water, mixing -then you have to load the jars - all the work you tried to do in the oven is pointless.

If you want learn how to grow mushrooms you should follow the tek. If you want to get good you need to know how it works. You will realize you don't need to add extra steps if you havn't followed the first steps.
Everyone does things different in this hobby. Its from experiance, trial and error.
Make six jars your way - make the other six following the PF-TEK. That could be your experiment.

no...I have access to sterile environment.
Well...I'm guessing no one knows if heat does any demage to the nutritional value of BRF...gonna have to find out myself.

steam sterilization with BRF jars WORKS. Maybe there is a higher contamination rate than with using a pressure cooker, but if you do everything right the contam rate should be very minimal. I've just done my first 12 jars with steam sterilization. 4 are fully colonized and the rest are over 90%.
There's nothing wrong with expiramenting, but if you want results on your first time, follow the tek's exactly. People have already done all the legwork for you, all you have to do is follow the instructions. Baking your vermiculite and BRF is only going to add unnecessary steps.

oh and do what you want.
These people are just trying to help you have an aweseom first grow.
If you follow the teks you could have a huge bulk tray of huge potent shrooms your first grow. I wasnt on for starting at the bottom and working my way up my first time.

thank you very much for answering my question goofy
