Rye Grain sterilization Q...
    #4056279 - 04/14/05 09:51 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Hey all, quick query... I'm preparing to sterilize some rye grain, using the 'soak overnight' method. A friend told me that once the 24 hr soaking is complete to drain out any excess water and rinse the wet grain to clean a bit, but i didnt want to just take his advice as true, but also i didnt find much info about this possibly meaningless decision on shroomery pages. SO, should i do that, or not, or is it meaningless? Just a simple q... thanks

soak for 24 hrs . strain and rinse well. place in a pot and cover in water. simmer for 45 min. strain well for 20 min , load up jars en pc them. the 24 hr soak wil germinate any endospores that will normally survive the pc. the simmering pat is to hydrate your grain. i do it for 45 min, others may do it longer

well you want your grains covered and they will aboreb some afoaf had to add more water to his pot he did 6qts at once and had a hard time getting that much to boil he thinks its better to fill the pot up with water bring to boil add grains and reduce heat to a simmer then start counting your time it seemed to him to be more efeciant but he only did it once

i dont let the water get to the boiling point . idont think that is simmering and the higher temps will result in exploded grain kernnels. i let the water get to the point where you see steam coming off the top, just uner boiling

In achieving a good simmer, you should let the pot of water just come to a boil, then reduce the temperature (on my oven to level 3 out of 10), then add the rye. Also, use a cover on your pot. This helps retain the heat. The water should be on the verge of boiling-this is a simmer.

You guys should try just loading the dry rye in your jars with the right amount of water, and PC'ing it....  I've NEVER had a single jar ever contam on me, and alot of people around here do it this way.  IMHO, soaking and simmering is just a waste of time... GL peeps :stoned:

yeah you want to keep the lid on when simmering

i like soaking and simmering once you get your timming right your jars should be waiting on you not you waiting on your jars i dont get why soo meny people are in a hurry qt jars are done in a week do them so you knock up 12 and two days later spawn 12 and two days later harvest the 12 you spawned befor constant cycle
