Lewis Carroll

I just bought The Complete Works of Lewis Carroll for 15 bucks and I'm looking forward to digging in!

Anyone have a particular story, riddle or poem they like?

This guy was a fucking genius, he was good in a literary, logical and mathemetical sense... I have to respect a logician who can write so creatively because most math people are boring as fuck

*alleged pedophile

can't a brotha' just appreciate the innocence of children without being labeled a pedophile? oh wait... you're just getting back at me... since I said the same thing to you when you mentioned him

or was that Oscar Wilde? either way I also bought the Complete Fairy Tales of Oscar Wilde

Yeah, I read somewhere that he had a hobby of drawing nude child models (always with their parents present, though). Of course, no one can really say if he had any sexual stimulation from this; it might have just been a quirk he had. Also, supposedly he wrote Alice in Wonderland for a little girl he was obsessed with. There's a Tom Waits album called Alice that's loosely based off that concept, it's pretty cool the way he presents the whole idea.

But yeah, the guy was definately one of the greats. It annoys me how people write him off as a druggie (even though he wasn't at all) because of the counterculture Alice in Wonderland has spawned.. he had some really cool perceptions of the world that he put into his little books and poems.

Wikipedia has a nice, objective article on his alleged pedophelia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_Carroll#Allegations_of_paedophilia

I also really doubt he did a lot of drugs, if any. He was alive in the 1800's... what drugs would be available at that time? I think he was just a very eccentric and creative mind.

Oscar Wilde wasn't a pedophile. He had sex with 18 year olds, that's not pedophilia.

All the drugs we have now would be available in the 1800s, except for the recent chemical concoctions. Drugs may have been less accessible, but they were available.

Yeah, I guess shrooms are a possibility but LSD wasn't synthesized until the 1930's... it seems those are the most likely drugs he would have done.

I'm not saying drugs weren't around, I just don't think they were as common.

One of the first poems I ever memorized was "The Jabberwocky" by Lewis Carroll. I think I was about 9 or 10 years old. I can still recite it on command.

Blow, blow your trumpets till they crack,
Ye little men of little souls!
And bid them huddle at your back -
Gold-sucking leeches, shoals on shoals!

Fill all the air with hungry wails -
?Reward us, ere we think or write!
Without your Gold mere Knowledge fails
To sate the swinish appetite!?

And, where great Plato paced serene,
Or Newton paused with wistful eye,
Rush to the chace with hoofs unclean
And Babel-clamour of the sty

Be yours the pay: be theirs the praise:
We will not rob them of their due,
Nor vex the ghosts of other days
By naming them along with you.

They sought and found undying fame:
They toiled not for reward nor thanks:
Their cheeks are hot with honest shame
For you, the modern mountebanks!

Who preach of Justice - plead with tears
That Love and Mercy should abound -
While marking with complacent ears
The moaning of some tortured hound:

Who prate of Wisdom - nay, forbear,
Lest Wisdom turn on you in wrath,
Trampling, with heel that will not spare,
The vermin that beset her path!

Go, throng each other?s drawing-rooms,
Ye idols of a petty clique:
Strut your brief hour in borrowed plumes,
And make your penny-trumpets squeak.

Deck your dull talk with pilfered shreds
Of learning from a nobler time,
And oil each other?s little heads
With mutual Flattery?s golden slime:

And when the topmost height ye gain,
And stand in Glory?s ether clear,
And grasp the prize of all your pain -
So many hundred pounds a year -

Then let Fame?s banner be unfurled!
Sing Paeans for a victory won!
Ye tapers, that would light the world,
And cast a shadow on the Sun -

Who still shall pour His rays sublime,
One crystal flood, from East to West,
When ye have burned your little time
And feebly flickered into rest!

HI, I am in the process of posting a complete 36 page booklet of alice Liddelll and Charles Dogson and their relationship in the Ethnobotanical Gardens Forum.
Your posting here reminded me to dig it out of storage. Took me two hours to find it.

Read this one:

Pretty trippy shit.
