Computer Case Drying Tek
    #4055500 - 04/14/05 06:01 PM (12 years, 13 days ago)

I must begin this post by stating, I am a computer geek!  I am also a computer constructor, as many people are.  I noticed weeks ago that in some cases, there is quite a bit of space and also quite a bit of air flow.  So I started wondering how I could make my Computer into a cost-effective drying container.

BTW if you really want this to work keep in mind that dust should be cleaned from your computer before drying and you should have good air flow!

1. I use gladware containers.  By cutting half the sides off I get a sound structure with maximum air exposure.

2. I fill the containers then put them right next to my intake fan, so that air is blowing over the shrooms.

3. After 1 to 2 days of sitting in the computer, I will take them out and use a desiccant to make them real dry.

Hope this helps all of you people who want to grow and cure shrooms at minimal costs.  Peace  :pimpin:

I have done the same today I just took all the components off my motherboard and made a spot for the mushrooms to sit in front of the CPU fan booted the computer up and it worked alright but i was worried that the fan doesn't run very fast like i can feel a cool breeze on my hand when its on but do you think thats enough to dry out the mushrooms before they start to rot?
I do intend on then moving them to a chamber with damp rid in it for a few days after.

the cpu fan draws air down over the heat sink to cool it down, it doesnt suck air out.

it will work to some degree since it is warm in there, but it works better with a good airflow over the mushrooms,

I hung a wire cage (was a cutlery drainer I believe) behind my computer exhaust fan. got them pretty dry in a couple of days, then stored them with desiccant in a sealed container. any mutants and aborts I put in a little synthetic pouch.

Buy a box fan, theyre cheap and will help with the hot summer days.

I did this 5 years ago when I first started growing but I hollowed out everything in the computer case except the fan and added an incandescent light bulb.  No need for desiccant.

Lol nice. I wish i had read this before i bought a dehydrator the other day.

I have all the components too. I even have a stripped down electric space heater, that i could have integrated. I was just looking for a good enclosure, and didnt even think about an atx case.

okay i could easily fit a lightbulb in the computer box.
but without the light do you think it would still work okay?

A lightbulb will work, but a heavy duty hair dryer would be better. As I said, I have the coil and fan out of a space heater. Something to this tune would be ideal.

Yea it worked great for me, but once you start fucking with bulk its pretty useless its hard to fit 4-5 lbs of wet mushrooms into

This is easy. Gut the case. Pull everything out that you can. Put your shrooms in onion bags. Hang them in the case.

Well I had 5-6 sgfc's going with cakes and cased trays and the case was able to dry most of what came from those...  I built trays in the case and i would layer the mushrooms in between layers of newspaper stacked 8-10 high.  That was usually much more than 100 shrooms at a time.  Also this is in a climate with a very high RH.

Well I used the case for about 8 months I believe and I never had a fan burn out on me. Mileage will vary I guess.  Im not a big computer person but I had no issues with this setup.
