well, most people here swear coir doesnt work as well as peat and has been taken out of the shear lack of peat with some people. For me coir has always worked. Never tried peat though.
The thing is I can get coir, and cant find peat anywhere near by.

Bottom line: Both work.

Is this a trick question?

Straight Coco Coir sucks!~

Straight peat moss sucks!~

---

The reason that I wrote the 60/40 Verm and Coco Coir tek was to help newbies have a better casing material than using just plain Verm.
Alot of people get great results from using the 60/40.

The only draw back to the Verm/Coco Coir casing is...that you need to fruit it before the mycelium breaks the surface of the casing layer.
If you wait too long to fruit...the mycelium will grow through the casing layer too quickly and you will have to patch the casing layer...and if you don't patch it, you might get a bad pinset.

The major benifit of using 60/40 is that the Coco Coir will change color when it is drying out...so you know that your casing isn't as moist as its suppose to be.

---

50/50 Plus is excellent!~

50/50 Plus:

15 1/2 cups vermiculite
15 1/2 cups peat moss
4 1/2 cups crushed oyster shell
1.2 cups of hydrated lime
15 cups of water

had excellent results using this.

---

both the 50/50 Plus and 60/40 are winners in my book!~

Pete is a very acid casing material. Hydrated lime is required to sweeten it up. It can found at the hardware store. Small stores usually.

Do any of you guys see any necessity in adding a pH buffer to a verm/coco mix?

By the way, I use a great mix made by GroTek (marijuana supplies) called Coco Earth. It's a mix of coco coir (already broken up), vermiculite and sand. In the few casings I had that turned out, a mix of 2/3 vermiculite to 1/3 Coco Earth worked out great.

Roadkill i tend to fruit my 50/50+ before the myc is showing. If a few spots pop up i patch. I usally dont get any myc visible untill after the first flush.

Now i have been doing this before i learned of this site. Most people i see have myc on their casing before the first pins grow. My knots and such all form below the casing level and only the pins are visible.

Now i have seen ALOt of people with myc on theit casing(not Overlay). Should i be fruiting later? Just kinda wondered what you do.

How do you know when the myc is just beneath the surface? I screwed up some casings (with coco),I waited too long to initiate fruiting and ended up with overlay. I want to continue using coco coir, I'm just going to have to learn to guessestimate when the mycelium is just about to pop up.

well if you lay a even substrate and case failry evenly then when you first see a couple of dime sized patches, then if you can bet its just below the surface. If you fruit too soon it will just take a day or two loner to pin. I think it might take me a day or two longer to get pins then the people around here. But i also dont have any myc above the surface of the casing. Is that a benifit? RK?
