slow mycelium growth on whole rice cake
    #4055020 - 04/14/05 03:49 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Hi! on my first try of pf tek i decided to inoculate one of my 6 jars into
whole brown rice only .no verm ( and mixed with water of course).
anyway that was 5 weeks ago. the other 5 regular pf jars (brf&verm)was fully colonized and had there birthday a week ago. but this whole rice one is still in incubator. making very slow (but steady) mycelium growth. (see photo taken today)

i belive this is dew to overly packed jar.
What do you think? should i birth it anyway? i don't think it will ever fully colonized or go much more than this. maybe i should case it?
another idea i thought was break it down as i would to to case it and
then spread into new regular pf jars. (verm, brf, water) or into less
densed whole brown rice cakes.
thanks for your input.

How did you prepare this jar, you cooked the rice prior to loading into jars right?

Whole rice can be interesting to pack in jars correctly, you have to almost pack it in with a fork, but not so much as to squash the pockets.

hey, I'm growing brf w/ verm, and i was experiencing something similar to what you described in the title. I flipped my jars over yesterday in the incubator (so the holes in the lid were on the bottom, and now my myc growth nearly tripled in size overnight. It was day 12 when i flipped them and about 50-60% colonization. Now its day 13 and they are above 80%. Good Luck to you.

(Will someone please verify this before it is recommended to try in this instance)

See if ya can't flip that cup upside down (without doing damage to the foil of course) to get the substrate seperated from the sides of the cup a bit. It'll finish up quick.

Thats sorta what i was getting at, i think the increased air exchange provides for easier myc access to the entire jar. I may be entirely incorrect though.

Yes diver. i cooked it prior to packing but it kept inflating while in PC. and became so dense. i was actually surprised when i so it's colonizing at all.
I'll try flipping it to increase growth but don't you think 5 weeks is way too long for incubation? what do you think of casing it?

It kept inflating when you PC'ed? Then it wasn't cooked right. Rice fully expands when cooked according to the directions (usually 45+ minutes in a pot) and should not expand after that. There's your problem.

Turn it upside down and bang the jar to get it off the bottom, maybe free up things and get more colonization that way.

I'd case it whole.

you're probably right about the cooked rice. (i prepared it al-dante as i like it on my plate )
no way of knocking it out that jar in this state. it's packed like hell. only a fork will do the job. you say dig it out and case anyway?
