A sorry pinset.
For the hell of it, I simply added a casing cover to a small colonized tray & right then - exposed it to pinning / fruiting conditions to see what kind of pinset would form.
Below is the result.
This is beginnings of pinset that formed on a tray that was incubated after the casing cover was added, then patched as needed until it had an even spread of rhizo on the surface.

heard a couple peole say there was benefits to no incubation once cased, but your post makes it pretty clear otherwise 
you know,
in that log that "i" is doing,
there was another casing of similar specs w/
the difference being strain and spawn (bunch of old cakes)
the two were placed in incubation at the same time,
but one was cased early as far as "i" is concerned , (the advice of another member was taken.) {5 day spawn run}
the other was left to incubate for 10 days.
the one monitored in the log was placed under fruiting conditions
has primordia just beginning to form, and casing layer is adequately colonized.
however, the second casing (which was in it's second day of casing run) shot up some fat little thumbs today.
the casing layer is not colonized to my liking, and it can be expected that most of that cas. material is coming up come harvest time.

heh i simply have to add it, you know my monotub project right agar?
well, i set it up and sealed it, patched it like once on one single spot
(you could say its never been patched ..) and this is what i ended up with:
still, no doubt, patching is key to maximum efficiency.

Excellent thread (as always) agar! I'm currently awaiting 100% colonization of my first ever spawn to h/poo, and was contemplating how I'll handle my casing technique. Previously I've been using verm/coir at about 50/50 eyeballed, but I'm switching to peat/verm for the first time as well. Looks like I'll be patching, and getting the most even layer of rhizo's pokin out before I initiate fruiting! Thanx, great post!

A good pH test kit, probe or strips is a MUST.... if you use peat. Otherwise you can F/U the works.

on average, how long is your incubation period, agar?

After adding casing, it runs from about 5 to 8 days.

i incubated for 3 days and saw a couple of quarter sized areas of myc coming up so i patched and put into fruiting chamber a few hours ago. should i leave it or put back into incubation?
