Judge Strikes Down FDA Ban on Ephedra
    #4054869 - 04/14/05 03:19 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

By MARK THIESSEN, Associated Press Writer

SALT LAKE CITY - A federal judge Thursday struck down the FDA ban on ephedra, the once-popular weight-loss aid that was yanked from the market after it was linked to dozens of deaths.

The judge ruled in favor of a Utah company that challenged the Food and Drug Administration's ban. Utah-based Nutraceutical claimed in its lawsuit that ephedra "has been safely consumed" for hundreds of years.

Supplements that included ephedra have been widely used for weight loss and bodybuilding, but have linked to 155 deaths, including that of Baltimore Orioles pitching prospect Steve Bechler. The FDA ordered the substance off the market in April 2004.

Judge Tena Campbell's ruling sends the matter back to the FDA "for further rulemaking consistent with the court's opinion" and keeps the agency from enforcement action against the companies.

FDA officials did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Company president Bruce Hough said the decision is about "protecting the public's access to safe and effective dietary supplements."

What good does the FDA do?

In theory, they protect the public from tainted food and dangerous medicine. Unfortunately, politics and greed are mixed up within the FDA, which means the publics best interest comes last.

I for one would like to see the FDA have much tighter control and standardization controls on supplements and herbal remedies. Remember the tryptophan scare in the late 80's/early 90's? That was over a decade and a half ago, and there are still absolutely no controls for ensuring a pure and safe product with no contaminants. For all we know that B vitamin we've been taking was processed with hemlock or something absurd (ok, unlikely example, but you know what I mean)

Excellent. This is great news. As long as ephedra is used cautiously, it's not overwhelmingly dangerous. I can remember doing some dumb things in college with the stuff though, like drop two Ephadrine pills (brand name ephedra) and then go to a bar and get trashed.

I knew a freshman in college who would take 7 Ephadrine pills spread throughout her day. It's scary to see people act like that: "Oh, it's ok, it's just ephedra..."  :nonono:

Your typical bodybuilder or knowledgeable dieter will take 25mg of ephedrine coupled with 200mg caffeine three times daily while preparing for a competition or just looking to lose weight in general. So, that amounts to 3-6 ephedrine tabs daily.

It's really not a big deal if you know what your doing. Trust me, their are much worse/harmful stimulants out there.
