strait verm casing, no signs
    #4054064 - 04/14/05 11:53 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

i made a casing with strait verm about 4 1/2 days ago. 3 1/2 pint cakes, no light, at around mid to upper 80's. As of now there is no sign of mycelium coming up. I do take the lid off once a day to check, which is the only time it gets fresh air and a bit of light. Could this be causing the problem? How long should I wait before checking it again?

I have never cased with just verm but my casings usually start showing growth/need to be patched by day 2/3. By day 3/4 I have the casing in the fruiting chamber.

Again I have never ever cased with just straight verm. In fact I don't understand why you would?

I case with str8 vermiculite and i haven't had a single problem. my guess is that your casing layer might be too thick and the mycellium is haveing a hard time pokeing it's head through.

^That sounds like the problem^

My experience with straight verm has been great, I just use a very thin layer, 1/8"-1/4" I've never had mycelium colonize straight verm such as it would a normal casing layer, more like form primordia underneath the wet verm.

I wouldn't keep any with straight verm that long in the incubator. Like I said, it probably won't colonize it much. Introduce it to fruiting conditions, and keep that verm plenty moist so primordia can form on it.
