NYC subway question.
    #4053265 - 04/14/05 03:59 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Well, I'm hoping someone around here is from NYC.
I have a good bet someone is you know.
My question is about the subway. Can you share metro cards.
I know last time I was there with my girl they had 7 day unlimited ride metro cards so we asked and the teller is like you NEED two, and since I had a nice stash of cash I said sure.

Well, I'm going back for to see the zen trickseters on the 23rd and check out a few museums next weekend, but were short on cash this time. I was wondering do you NEED two. Whats stoping you from swiping one, handing it to the next person and than walking thourgh the turnstyle?

Sorry, the shroomery may not be the best place to post this but I was trying to hit up a large board that may have members in that area.

Say you'll come back when you can

Maybe I'll be back here too
It all depends on what's with you

werd i'm from nyc man. fucked up thing is they jacked the price up on unlimited cards but i could imagine them bustin your balls since an unlimited card is supposed to be for just the person who buys it, otherwise one person could buy one unlimited card and pass it around everywhere in theory. when in high school my friends and i would be issued free unlimited ride cards and sometimes we would get busted using them off hours on school days. if you really need to use the train alot that day just get 2 unlimited, unless you think you can pull off passing it off. it depends, sometimes they will be watchin and sometimes they won't. but using like a regular metro card, you could have more then one person use it at a time since u actually put cash on it. i'd say take the chance, and if they bust your balls then pay.

being a former computer science geek, i can assure you that there is a
program in place to check to see if a card goes in twice without
coming out once, or that there's a time delay scheme going on.

That doesn't really make any difference. It's not like someone is monitoring the turnstiles from a computer and then dispatch some type of security. I've done it before. The unlimited cards are identical to the regular cards.

Well then there should be. And NYC should hire me to implement it
and give me lots of money so I can drag the project out for years.

edit: It's easier for the computer to just not let you in.

But, since you're in NYC and I'm not, I'll trust your observations.

at 2 dollars a ride, they are making a fortune and they are still in debt, and the unions will fight till the death so they don't raise the prices.

actually. now that i think about it, when i used to actually purchase unlimited cards i remember all my friends would get seperate ones, so i guess you can't get over using the unlimited cards on the same turnstile more then once.

couldn't you use it then pass it off to another person to use a block away(or how ever many blocks it is? it's been a few years since i was in NYC)

Unlimited Metro Cards require 17 minutes between uses. They cannot be reused immediately. That's all there is to it. If you buy a card with a certain amount you could swipe five people through in a row. But the Unlimited cards require 17, count 'em 17, minutes.

No, they're not. The regular cards could be used like this: I put 8 bucks on a card, walk through, pass the card back to my girlfriend, she swipes through and altogether it's -4 dollars from the card. Unlimiteds are based on time.
