haha I was just about to do this exact same thread when I saw this.
I love the Mars Volta, they're easily my favorite band right now. I've been listening to them straight for almost six months... it usually takes me three weeks to get sick of a band. Oh my god they're just incredible and they're live stuff is amazing. They seriously need to come to seattle.
There just isn't anything out there like the MV that rocks and is a mind trip and has a message. It's just damn good music.
The Haunt of Roulette Dares is just the most mind blowing song I've ever heard... it tripped me out sober... I seriously need to get some shrooms and listen to both albums.
I originally didn't get their studio stuff but it was their music that made me a fan. Eventually I really got into their studio stuff and like both now. I think when they first started in 2001 and the beginning of 2002 they weren't very good live but now they're absolutely mind blowing live. At least in my opinon from all the videos and bootlegs I've seen and heard.

I saw The Mars Volta here in San Diego, on the 22nd of April.
Let me first tell you, I own all their stuff, and their side projects, listen to it regularly, and all around love the guys.
I was excited to the point of having a hard time sleeping the day before because I was thinking of the show.
Now fast forward to the concert...I'm up close, have a couple blunts, smoke a little, they come out and right away just go off into a half hour ramble. Now I appreciate the improv, energy and unique nature of every show, but what I saw was absolute SHIT.
I'm not kidding, but it sounded like everyone was playing parts to different stuff. I'm a regular listener....and yet I just couldn't get into the random noise and improv.
Maybe they were off that night, but I think they are more hype than genius. I'm sure a chemically enhanced concert would have blown me away, because the art and lighting were cool...but I'm over the whole Mars Volta crap. They could have done MUCH MUCH better.

Can't stand them. They seem more focused on the art of making music/sound/noise than the actual music. I've heard Frances, and they DO have some musical talent, but I really can't listen to them.

They're attempting to break the bounadaries of what's traditionally accepted in music, IMO... that's why it's so chaotic and random sometimes. They're letting the chaos guide them to new territory.

See, told you guys. Mars Volta kicks ass...in the studio. I love Mars Volta, but everything I've heard and seen of their live stuff, doesn't even come close to their studio work. I'm seeing them at the end of May, hoping that they can put on a good show, but we'll see.
Not to mention that Porcupine Tree plays the very next day. Now that is a true musically talented band.
