Smelly Ass Shit Question
#4046372 - 04/12/05 02:41 PM (18 years, 11 months ago) |

Just spawned some pasteurized straw/manure with grain about 4 days ago. Incubating at 84 degrees. It has begun to fill my house with a nasty, nasty smell, much like a toilet that has not been flushed. This is not pretty.
Checking the colonization, it seems not to be jumping the way I thought it should, so...
Questions:
1. Is this smell normal? 2. If not, should I assume contamination (perhaps not pastuerized well enough, etc...) and get this smelly thing the hell out of my house?
Quick responses would be appreciated, so I don't have to come home to this reek!

I've had this in the past with poo that wasn't quite aged enough. It reeked, so I know what you're talking about. Eventually the smell went away after colonization.
Nasty indeed, but it doesn't mean contams or trouble (yet)

1.) no smell is not normal. 2.) id toss it.
within 2 days you should see first signs of spawn recovering and growing into el pooperino, btw incubation for bulk subs isnt required as they are going to heat themselves during colonisation. peace ohm

Diver--this shit was dehydrated, so it should be plenty "aged".... At least that is my guess..
At this point, I'm really leaning towards chucking it. Damn, that shit smells!!

Dehydration doesn't have anything to do with age. I can dehydrate poo fresh out of the stall, does that mean it's aged properly? No.

Ohm--thanks for the reply. and thanks for the advice on bulk. I had always thought they could use a little heat to get them going. I was aiming for about 80 degrees ambient temp, and thinking that they would heat themselves up 5 or so more. Is this incorrect??

i noticed when i put larger casings(spawned w/ poo) in the incubator, the temps went up about 3-4 degrees

yeah, especially dehydrated poo seems like it SHOULD NOT smell like this. But, I've never used it before, so, that's why I'm asking! :-)

when i cased my poo i noticed it started to smell a little. i thought that because i incubated it, en the temps raised a bit that the heat being created inside tha casing was producing the odor. i dont know if that was really the case or not ,but when it was placed in the fruiting chamer the smell went away. good luck man. if the smell presists i would chuck it. esp. if it will be fruiting next to others.

diver--point taken about the aging. does all manure need to be properly aged to be usable??

thanks for the replies out there... if i see no good colonization in the next day or so, it is ending up fertilzing my fucking flowers! At least now i've put it in a larger container, and the smell of shit isn't slapping me in the face when i come home.

Yup, chuck it
I would bet, this "smelly ass shit" was store bought bagged cow / steer manure. Is that correct?
If so, I will explain - why it now smells like it just squirted out of a cows ass.

hey agar! trying not to incriminate any of our beloved vendors, the manure came from one of my favorites... I assume it was cow shit.
explain, explain. :-)

That?s because the poo was probably not aged enough and it?s fermenting.

no holes in the bottom... maybe a combination of both of those things (See above)? i was just inclined to trust the product of the above vendor to be good for cultivation...

Foul shit smells like that most often come from from anaerobic bacterial decomposition of organic matter. In other words, it is emitting fart like methane "gas" . Not a good sign & indicates the substrate is rotting.

if you got it from a sponsor the shit was good... i'm using the same thing as you now, first try at bulk and so far i'm 3/3, no losses to contams and no bad smells at all
it could be that you didn't spawn w/ a high enough ratio... that would ahve led to longer colonization times, and longer col. times means more time for the bulk sub to decompose
