Bamboo advice?
    #4049282 - 04/13/05 06:11 AM (19 years, 8 days ago)

I was wondering if anyone has grown bamboo in zone 7 and could give me some advice on what kind to grow. I've been looking at several types of Phyllostachys.

I've got a few in my garden. They are all quite hardy species, since they are dealing fine with the English winters. I'll go and see if they still have the name labels... I've got some really nice yellow, lime-green and black stemmed varieties.

Bamboo is great for privacy, but it propagates very quickly and can become a pain in the ass if you do not stay on top of it.

The stuff I have doesn't seem to spread too much at all - I'm not sure if that's because they are varieties that don't spread, or because they might not be in ideal conditions for spreading.

There are running and clumping types. The runners are more agressive but you can keep them in check by mowing in the spring when the new shoots appear. Or so I've read.

Well since there is a topic on bamboo i just wanted to share that the field i go cube hunting has a forest of some type of green bamboo. It is really cool especally walkin through it picking the magical fungi, it is quite a enlightening experience especially when there is a full moon. Although i have never tripped in the field before, im sure that might not be a good idea for different reasons..., cows, alligators, old men and mabye a few warewolfs :mushroom2:

I actually just got back from going to a nursery and asked the guy if he had any bamboo. He has a patch and said I could have it all, I just gotta get it out of there. He also has a bunch of free pots and shit he said I can have.

We have plenty of wild bamboo around here. It's actually "River Cane", not fat bamboo like in china. It doesnt get very fat, just tall and skinny. If you want to plant some, all you have to do is saw or chop down some plants, then dig a hole and plant at least the bottom two segments under soil. I was thinking about driving around the country and cutting down a bunch for my yard.
