Years of encountering some of the worst spelling I have ever seen here on the Shroomery, has enabled me to read most anything.

Seems the latter sentence has more truth than the first eh? The whole word does need to be there, but it seems that since most words aren't much more than 5 or 6 letters, with 2 letters staying in their places, you only see 3 or 4 letters being switched around, which is easily discernable with a simple mental spellcheck. If you took out the letters except for the first and last and replaced them with asterisks, though, it becomes much more difficult to discern words beyond 3 letters.

That's because you're replacing the letters with asterisks.

That's not what the study talks about.

Sigh...

wow, I read that with no difficulty, that's interesting.

How do they explain when someone reads a word that is not there?

for example, I may say, "I feel like drunk" but you read exactly what I meant to say "I feel like getting drunk".... why does that happen? Is it because we are connected at the time? Our souls?

Also sometimes people say the wrong word, but I will read it as whatever word they intended and not even acknowledge it at all and not even know they messed up unless they correct themselves. OR they you add an extra word, and I will read right over it as if it wasnt there. Thats strange too. I always leaned toward believing things like the original post and my examples were due to connecting with others, maybe the study is only the half of it. I'm sure some people out there cant read that...and think the study is dumb. I think it's awesome though and glad you shared that.

How do they explain when someone reads a word that is not there?

People here read entire paragraphs that are not there. I encounter this malady daily. This pandemic is called "projection" and there seems to be no way to stop it.  :frown:

You're going about things the wrong way, gomp.

You need to be working on ways to make yourself more understandable, not less. Just pickin' at ya, haha!

Yes I have scanned text before and thought it contained no errors only to go back later and when I looked more carefully found numerous mistakes, sometimes my own. Interesting that the brain has its own built-in error correcting software!

Yes I realize. It was an experiment that goes to prove there might be some depth to their study. I was specifically addressing the "the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be
in the rghit pclae."

More should be done perhaps. Try mixing a whole word, including the first and last letters, perhaps see if the word can be reversed with the first and last letters then mixed, etc. You can't let Cambridge do all the information finding.
