Yes there are several types of Rye Grain.

You don't want Rye grass seed.

Never heard of those 2 terms for Rye Grain...sorry.

I have used :

Winter Rye
Fall Rye
Spring Rye
and some other one that I can't remember.
I have never seen a Summer Rye.

got them all from feed stores...they all worked.

I did run into some skimpy small looking Rye Grain in the feed store the last time I was looking for some...and I passed on buy it.

I guess it comes down to quality...at least for me.

If it looks smaller than this...I don't want it.

Aren't all grasses pereneal? And grains, like wheat and rye berries, annual? Grasses die or go dormant in winter and come back each year, i.e. pereneal. Grains, like wheat and rye, which are used to make flours, are planted each year, i.e. annual. I am not a farmer or a gardener hehe, but I think thats close.

I think so.

When you are talking about flowers...

Annual flowers bloom only once and will need to be replaced each year.
Perennials come back year after year.

I'm sorry to bring this thread back to life, but I'm having some problems finding this stuff at feed stores. I am asking for rye berries, rye grain, Winter rye, etc. So far no one seems to know what the hell I'm talking about.

One guy asked what animal it's for. I have a feed store very close to me and others in my area and someones got to carry it. I even found crushed oyster shells, so it's got to be around.

Are there any other ways I can ask for this?

I've had that problem before too.

Some of the people that work in Feed Stores don't know jack shit about what they are selling.

Ask to talk to someone else...hopefully they will know.

I've had the what animal are you trying to get feed for question asked too.
Tell them that you are growing edible mushrooms...and that you need Rye grain to grow them.

yw

one Feed Store I got so frustrated with...

I asked to see all the Rye they had listed on their computer...by visual inspection.

I found what I was looking for.

so take a good look at the picture at the top...cause you might have to id it visually.

You might try specifying that you are looking for rye that you will be able to grind yourself for your own home grown rye flour. Like wheat. Maybe that will trigger something in the feed guys mind.

>arnt pans grown on rye grass seed

No, but it works great as spawn for them. They need dung or straw though. There was a log of them growing on rye grass seed, but not to much info and in the end, it proved to be a poor substrate for them...slightly better then rye berries or millet, still not worth the time to not add dung or straw.

Cubies will grow well on rye grass seed though. Soak for 24 hours, simmer for about 20-30 minutes, strain and mix with about 20% verm (dry) as its straining to absorb moisture and hold it in better. I'd also add another 30% moist sterilized verm when you case, but I've had fine results without any verm at all, or 20%. It makes great spawn for cubies too...breaks up very easily with verm mixed in and very small kernals make for multiple inoculation points. I actually had some really really nice flushes off RGS and cubies. Just a little more expensive then other things though.

>Aren't all grasses pereneal?

No, there is Annual and Pereneal rye grass seed. I dont know much about that stuff either, but I know I've bought both kinds of grass seed before..

>I am asking for rye berries, rye grain, Winter rye, etc. So far no one seems to know what the hell I'm talking about.

I have yet to go into just about anywhere asking for something for this hobby without looks of confusion. Then I take a good hard look at the shelves... I agree with roadkill there, your going to probably have to find it yourself. It is usually a good idea to ask though as well, because sometimes they have to order things special order. In addition to this though, have you checked out health food stores? Like grocery type stores that sell all organic stuff... They often have it there..thats the only place I could find it, had no luck at feed stores also.

Really though, I just go and pick it up every now these days and then and mix a little in with the bird seed. It helps a little, but for spawning to poo, WBS works pretty well all by itself. For fruiting off grain itself, it was needed though...

Thanks for the input Scatman. I'm sure I can find it at a local health food store, but they charge an arm and leg for most of their stuff. Looks like I'll have to do some up close reconnaissance at the local feed store.

True... .59 cents a pound at mine. By a 50 pound bag though and you save like 5 or 10% and its like 27 bucks. Stretched out with a little birdseed if your fruiting with it, or only used in small amount if your spawning with it...it doesnt turn out to bad for what you can get out of it. Rye expands much more then birdseed too...I found 1 pound would make 2 quarts of soaked and simmered strait rye...thats two casings, so this casing (one quart) cost me about 27 cents in substrate (probably like 10-20 cents of casing mix):
