they took their sweet ass time

finally! after all this time (over 2 months) i am seeing some decent progress. none of my cakes were even fully colonized but i took what myc i could and mixed it with birdseed/hay cobb substrate that has been sitting in jars for 2 weeks and not colonizing. my casing went as follows (from bottom to top): 3/4 inch of sterile 50/50 pine nuggets (chunks) and hay cobb; which i left quite moist, 1 1/4 inch myc/seed/hay substrate mix and about 1/4 inch casing of 50/50 peat moss and cedar mulch. i layered all this on sunday afternoon and tuesday 9pm when i checked it (i leave the setup at a freinds house [moms suck when it comes to legal crap]) and (to my utmost surprise) casing layer is about 25% colonized in 2 days with fluffy myc. (ps cubensis by the way). no question to this post, just me being ecstatic about my first decent progress and wanting to personally thank EVERYONE here at the shroomery that has offered me advice, or helped me in any way. i cannot credit shroomery enough, especially these boards where i learned so much. thank you all, if i can get mikes digi camera from him before he goes to jail, ill have pics for you all. thanks again!!!

just me posting my progress and methods for anyone here whos interested. the casing layer as of last night was about 50% colonized and going fast, so i deep scratched the whole casing layer down to the seed and mixed it all up again, spreading teh myc to places where it wasnt originally. no mycellium was visible at this point as it had all been overturned. this morning, less than 12 hours later, the casing is more colonized than what it was when i scratched. i will probably add another casing layer tonight or tomorrow depending on growth, and also drop temps from 85 to about 81 or so. hope to cold shock by saturday, maybe tomorrow. if anyone experienced reads this, should i wait longer to shock? what should i look for to initiate pinning? i really think the myc has a good hold on my mixed substrate but im not sure if its 100% yet tho. prolly by later today it may be. all intelligent suggestions welcome.

ok, new question. last night (09-27) i looked after scratching 24 hours earlier and the myc was more than 50% colonized yet again on the casing layer. again i scratched it down to nothing and spread it again. i also added another real light casing layer afterward (1/4 inch max in some spots) and not really pressed it down, but i kinda patted it even so the rhizomorphs would have a lil less room maybe. i mean real light pressure on the very top layer. if it doesnt work ill scratch it up a bit on teh top. i also dropped the water temp from 86 to about 80 to slow the growth a lil. its in a dishwashing tub which is placed on top of a aquarium with teh heater set at those temps but it is not floating or touching the water because it does not fit in all teh way, it sets nicely on the top, but i assume that it will be a few degrees colder up there than the water temp, but it is covered with cardboard (till fruiting where im going to place saram wrap) so i know the myc may be heating the inside a few degrees with its growth so i assume that the substrate temp is close to the water temp. room temp is at about 65 degrees and the setup is on the floor. do you think this new casing layer (by the way, it is eqiual part cedar mulch, vermiculate, and peat moss) with decreased temp will stop the overlay that i am heading towards? i also added some calcium carbonate to teh casing, just a ligt sprinkle before sctarching to mix it up then the 2nd casing was added. i plan on leaving it outside in my friends car to cold shock tonight for about 8 hours (set it out before bed and bring it in when we wake up), i excpect the temps to be around 50 or so. then in the morning put it on about 75 degrees with the saran wrap top for light. does this sound decent? i really want some feedback on the second casing layer and thoughts about the overcolonization. man i can never do a short post it seems...

Beppo, is this a tek you're following, or are you just making it up as you go along? I mean no offense, but you seem to be all over the place. Cedar? Calcium Carbonate?

no im not really following a tek, i just take ideas from others and what i hear about here at the shroomery and put it into practice. yeah this is my first time growing and ive just been ruling out what does and does not work, and i think eventually i might even be good at mycology someday :) its not that i dont want to follow a tek, i just want to learn more thats all. i spend a good amount of time here just browsing the message board and gathering ideas. i just think its more fun that way.

Well then, You're alot like me. Still. I urge you to try the standard teks. At that point you can spread you wings and experiment. What I'm saying is, get the basics down, there's nothing wrong with them, they work fine even for us "pros". Then you can afford to mess around.

yeah i understand what youre saying, but if you read my original statement it says that i was having a problem with the jars. of about 30 jar attempts i have never seen a fully colonized jar, so i took what i could, mixed it and cased it. im starting new jars to see if i can get them colonized but im outta cubie spores cos i used 'em all on the jars, but im gonna get some lipa yais soon to try. plus i might be able 2 get some cubie and hawiian spores here locally from a FOAF. i really want the lipas tho, hope to get some thsi week... can anyone post ralphsters website in this thread plze?

Some hope for jars:::::
This is my second attempt after not having any luck whatsoever at colonizing my first jars....this attempt is kicking butt. Received some wonderful advice to build an incubation chamber. Non-transparent medium sized sterlite container, smaller container able to hold 12 jars placed within the larger container. Submersable fish tank heater suckered to the bottom of the sterlite submerged under combo of H20 and H202, heater set to about 82degrees on 24/7. Used some freaky kitchen tool to raise the inner container above the water, both tops closed, 3 holes toward the top of each long side of both containers about 1/4" in diameter. Stick the jars in and wait. I hadn't seen any growth for a week before i built the chamber, then put them in the chamber and wham, in 1 or 2 days I began to see colonization. Birthed 4 cakes last week after 3 weeks in the chamber (4 weeks total). I did have to take tape off of others and turn upside down to accelerate growth, and tonite they're looking just about 100%. I would highly recommend the chamber...totally gratifying to watch too! Great fun.
