mycobag/spawn bag problems/issues
    #4048645 - 04/13/05 02:50 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Ok Ive taken a step into using spawn bags..

Ive done the pf tek with good results..
Ive done WBS with pretty bad results, although i made up for it in quantitiy. But I would say about 50% of them fail. As opposed to my BRF that did pretty good, at least 87% success rate.

Ive got 100 empty mycobags here... And I need to get shit under control... I need to refine my grain methods, and figure out whats making so many contam.

I notice that very often, my jars/bags look too wet.

I originally soaked over night , simmer 20mins, wash , drain for an hour, jar/bag , pressure cook 90mins..

but that got me alot of failed jars.
So then i tried soak over night , no simmer, drain , jar/bag, pressure cook 90mins..

still alot of contames.... So.. I think i might be soaking for too long.. cause my stuff still looks too wet. Although I do see less burst kernals than origanlly (mushy at the bottom), It still seems too wet..

So im thinking , soak 6 hours, no simmer, drain , jar/bag ...

wadda ya think?

How are you draining? Too much water was a problem for me for awhile until I started draining right.

A strainer doesn't work very well cuz all the WBS at the bottom still has a lot of water.

Rip a screen out of a window, that works superb.

I've had good luck doing the simmer thing, both with and without a pre-soak. Simmer for about 45 minutes, drain well, and sterilze. I always add a bit of gypsum as well, which you might consider.

dont rip the screen out of a window, thats the most dumbest things I have EVER heard, you can get screen from home depot or lowes for so cheap, and you wont have to pay to have a new screen made when you want a screen in your window again.

I actually do use a screen to drain
I drain it for about 4 hours... any longer and it starts to germinate...

^^^^ Lol

I'll let the others tear you apart on this one.

If i remember correctly, this was recommended by Magash himself. Doesn't matter if the screen is new or old the substrate is getting PC'd either way.

man if it takes you 4 hours to drain, you got bigger problems than contams.. could you clear up the statement a bit?

well the grain wont absorb too much water, you want it to get as much possible.. if things are too wet try draining all the water from the container you soaked in and let air dry for a couple hours before bagging it up. Just remember the point of soaking is to get the media as saturated as it can be with water- any thing that looks like too much water collecting is from the outside of the grain

im saying, dont ruin your screen from your window, get screen material and use it rather than fucking up your screen.

but if you just take it from a window you never use than it really is just like a free screen, who wants to go buy a screen anyway when you got so many already

Yes I do let It dry on the screen .. usually for 4-6 hours.. and by then it usually starts germinating...

Something I forgot....add dry verm to your WBS. It will soak up all that extra moisture very nicely.

yep, drain well, mix it up while draining

i used a strainer w/ i did the soak/simmer thing and you gotta keep the wbs from just sitting there... it won't drain completely unless you shake it around a lil, physically try to get all the water you can back out of it and then if need be throw in some dry verm
