you don't NEED a casing layer but it is recommended because it protects against contams during future flushes.

you dont need anything, but i'll spend an extra 20 minute for an extra flush before my shit contaminates : P you could just mist with an h20 h202 solution if you wanted. Use kiffy mix i guess or read a tek on casing. Thats why they are htere

if u use poo and straw till its fully colonized, then add straight straw as a casing layer, would this work good??

no the idea of a casing layer is to have a non nutritonal layer to protect from contams. Read a tek i am sure you'll learn something

Wrong wrong wrong everybody the purpose of a casing layer is to provide moisture.

Not going to do much for protection against contams unless you use straight coir or straight peat.

yes it keeps the moistre in but does so without being nutritional so no contams ::cross fingers:: grow on it.

if i am fully wrong please state it. i think this post cleared up my last one a little

You are not fully wrong, but like I said unless you use straight coir/ peat without verm it is not going to protect against contams.

Contams love anything with verm in it.

I could not find coir locally, people looked at me like I was somekinda idiot when I asked for it, but I'm told you can find it at Pet stores like Petco. I just bought mine online I got like 5 bricks for 15 bux i think.

Yes 50/50 is fine...you want your casing layer no more than 1/4 the thickness of your substrate layer.

a casing layer should be made from non nutritional materials...to help protect the substrate from getting contams...and is used to provide moisture to the substrate.

you can fruit off of a bulk substrate of horse poo without a casing layer...but you will get better pin sets and more protection against contams with a casing layer.

take care!~

Contams love anything with verm in it.

Why would you say that? Verm is rock. Contams do not love rock. Thats why its put on top of PF cakes dry in the jar. Maybe i misunderstood or you miss stated or something.

If you use straight peat, you will probably need to use a buffering agent, I believe crushed oyster shell works quite well, to adjust pH. Good Luck.
