Accelerated WBS soak!
    #4048055 - 04/13/05 12:15 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

If you are like me you have to worry about roommates walking by the stove and seeing a pressure cooker rattling about or catching you simmering WBS (wtf are you doing dude??).  You don't want to keep using the "i'm canning fruit" excuse, especially because there is never canned fruit in the fridge or freezer after the pc session.  you'd like to soak your wbs over night or even longer but you never know the exact window you'll have to get your WBS simmered, jarred, and pc'd...i know, its frustrating.

one of your roomies has a class schedule that only has him gone for a few hours at a time max (perfect to pc a couple batches but you aren't sure if he's gonna skip or be home early, or you don't want to seem extra nosey by asking him his day to day class schedule) so you can't find the perfect time to soak and simmer your grains because you don't know if you'll be able to use them soon enough, risking grain spoilage or a dozen suspicious jars burried in your freezer awaiting pc'ing.

today, my roommate says "hey, i'm going over to my girlfriend's house, i'll be back later tonight (or hopefully, tomorrow)".  i  thought to myself "if only i'd soaked my grains last night i could get a couple of pc's in."

i thought i'd see what happened if i threw some wbs into some water and went for the simmer w/o soaking.  i simmered for an hour, making sure to stir so the wbs didn't burn.  i had to turn the stove off because i had a class so i left the hot wbs on the stove in the pot and i came back 1.5 hours later to see that the grains had really plumped up (absorbed alot of water).  i simmered for a little bit longer even though i really didn't need to and then i rinsed, jarred, and now they are pcing...all the while my friend is busy somewhere else and i had time to do a lightning quick wbs to sterilized jar project.

estimated time needed to go from dry wbs to sterilized jar...about 5 hours.

i hope this works for people w/ less than ideal time windows. :mushroom2:

they suck at holding moisture, field capacity is best...

Agar's already anwsered this....

But for the less fortunate, this sounds ideal, the point is to get it to field capacity....

One MAJOR flaw btw

Endospores...The longer you soak, the more they germ. and the less chances of them surviving and fucking up your grow....

Glad you shared it with us
Gl man, hopefully you'll be able to grow soon w/o any worries

good point about the endospores IGnosticAbhorI. i never thought about that...however, knowing about fractal sterilization and how long endospores can live and germinate even after boiling i don't think it will be a problem...if it is a problem and i get an unusual contam rate or something i'll bump this thread w/ an update...hell, i'll update in about a week anyway to tell if it worked or not.

I have read online that PCing properly will kill endospores, everyone seems to worry about endospores.....

jeppa, mind that!

i had batches of rye i could do without presoaking and they went just fine,
then others that contammed big time without the presoak.

basically the soaking is a great thing -> endospore hatching and well worth the time.

besides that, tell the guys you live with what you do b/c if they find out one time and realise
that all your strange shit youve been doing is related to mushroom growing you can and possibly will
be in way more trouble than if you tell them now.

According to Anno neither soaking or simmering is necessary. He just adds the proper amount of water and grain to his jars and PC's them. I would personally trust any method Anno uses.

Wait, wait.....
It is necessary if you experience bacterial contamination problems with your grain.
If not, then not.

There is no "ultimate" preparation method, it is a matter of preference and of what works for you.
The no soak method works for me, very well so. Thus I use it.

OK. Speaking of the no soak method what amounts of grain and water do you use? I couldn't find any specific amounts using the search function.

i can second that, his writeup works great

and IMHO, by mixing within the jar you get a WAY better saturation
of the grains than by simmerin.

I am a big fan of the poo/coffee soak. I might try just using my poo/coffee/water mix with the no soak/simmer method.
