Few things:
Soak in a mild bleach bath, to ensure everything is dead
Rinse well.
Shove em in a dishwasher with some soap.

Problem solved, but be aware lids will rust.
Good thing they're cheap.

Contaminated jars follow a pretty similiar method, altho you'll want a stronger bleach solution, and you'll also want to open them in that solution, to ensure that the contaminant doesn't spread spores everywhere. In the case of contamination by fungal sources, leave em in there overnight, to make sure everything is dead.

By hand or dishwasher. You don't need to sterilize them or anything, just get the old visible junk out of the jars.

if the jars are contaminated you should probably toss them...after reading about mycotoxicosis i'm pretty much swayed into tossing contammed jars and only cleaning jars that didn't get contammed.

Bleach kills everything, even endospores.
A good strong bleach soak will salvage any jar.

its glass people. chill. go with diver on this one. just PC your jars once before you stick the substrate in if your really that paranoid. Glass cannot house contams, especially with the use of a PC.

Endospores, if deposited on glass, will survive pressure cooking.
Witness cracked corn problems with bacterial contamination after attempted sterilization.
In order to be 100% sure, the spores HAVE to be deactivated/killed, and bleach is an effective, widely availible, cheap agent to do so.

i only wash with soap the jars that were contamed. As for the rest i just rinse them, some seed is left int he jars but it just gets cooked and reused by the next mycelium. Bleach, dishwasher, all that shit is overkill

Agreed, but there's no such thing as being too clean.

man, if you've seen and read up on some of the types of contams i've seen, you'd realize surity is a priceless commodity.
Some contams will KILL YOU.
Maybe not the bacterial ones, but some of the fungal types......

Stick 'em in the dishwasher. They'll come out nearly sterile and ready for use.

If you put the lids in there, they'd probably corrode to total shit

I use a mild bleachy water to wash all my jars and lids...then run them through the dishwasher.

I like being too clean!~

Scaring people into thinking they need to take all these extra steps with bleach and what not doesn't make sense to me

Apologies, i only meant to share what i had learned about contamination and endospores with people.

I have had some problems in the past with recurring infections of previously contaminated jars with the same type of contaminant, in which the only vector of contamination was endosprores.

Pressure cooking will not deactivate endospores. That is fact. They are designed to survive through extremely harsh conditions, and will survive pressure cooking for extended periods of time such as are found in sterilization of substrate....once gain, look into common bacillus spp. that are found in endospore form in many types of grain, most notably corn.
I can provide numerous reference articles/pages if you'd like.

Ok fair enough, edited and removed most of my last post.

That may be, but I've never personally experienced that, interesting that you have though.

I'd definitely like any articles if you have them.
