Dry presterilised grain
    #4044380 - 04/12/05 04:41 AM (19 years, 1 month ago)

Is it possible to get dry presterilised grain anywhere?
I have had difficulty sourcing grain free from fungicides. If somebody got rye grain free from fungicide and irradiated it could it simply be soaked and steam sterilised in jars with no need for pressure cooking?

Irradiation cannot be very expensive since a lot of cheap fruit and vegetables go through the process so a 50kg of sterile rye would be nice to have.

It is costly for vendors to process the grains and then shipping the wet grains adds more expense. Dry sterile grain could be a great seller and cheaper to post and produce.

the deal is, how would you 'wetten' the sterilized grains?

the deal is, certain endospores within the grain cannot be killed
if the grain is sterilized dry b/c they only hatch during the soaking period.

so, even if i run some rye in the clave @ 30psi for an hour or two
im quite sure that there still are endospores alive and kicking ..

I think this is only valid for heat sterilization, not gamma irradiation sterilization.

Agreed, some endospores will always survive the pressure cooking cycle. The idea with sterilization is to give us a two week window of opportunity for our mushroom mycelium to colonize the grains to the point they can take care of themselves.

I'm not sure irradiation would kill bacterial endospores. It's an interesting idea though. By the way, if you buy organic rye berries from a health food store, they are required by law to be fungicide free.

Just becuase something is irradiated, it doesn't necessarily become radioactive itself.

It is hard to rind rye where I am, it seems it is a widely grown crop in the US but not the EU. I can get wheat. Health shops charge a fortune for organic stuff here so if some vendor started selling irradiated grain they may find a good worldwide market even though postage costs a lot it could be sterilised with simple steaming. Good for people who want to try grains but don't want to buy a pc (yet!)

The idea with sterilization is to kill all living organisms, including bacterial spores. If your pressure cooker/autoclave does so may vary, but IME unopened substrate jars consistently do not contaminate even after several months.

Wheat will work fine if you can't get rye in the EU.

For food irradiation, gamma rays are generated from 60Co or 137Cs which would both be nearly impossible for a vendor to acquire legally, so them irradiating it themselves is out of the question.

And I don't think grain is commonly irradiated in general because it doesn't typically harbor human pathogens that aren't easily gotten rid of in the normal cooking process. So you may be out of luck.
