Outdoor Beds Made Easy *PICS*
    #4043175 - 04/11/05 09:57 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

I am pretty excited about my outdoor woodlover beds so I decided to share my complete lack of knowledge in the mycology feild with the rest of you
Here is some virgin wood lover mycelium collected from the sf area.

Here it is running through bark, i didnt expect it to take so i mixed in some hardwoods after this pic was taken.

Here is a better pic of it running through the bark

Here is the actual bed different form the area where the first 3 pics were taken. It contains 3 different wood lovers that are prolific in the pnw

Growing very nicely off of a piece of alder onto the fir chips

Does this look healthy???? Mycelium running through Douglas Fir Chips aka playground woodchips

Some intruders. Lil cooksuckers!!!

they hold in humiditiy and create it. The evaporation off the leaves and the dripping of water when it rains. PLus it protect from heavy downpours. Only thing that sucks is that the lillies will die in a hard freeze but then again fruiting will stop then also

yes, i know they will. But not that it is what is in the bed.
Way back when i first got into this hobby i planted a bunch of azaleas around the front porch of my house. I was mowing the yard and i noticed a little cluster of cyans growing next to an azalea. I wasn't sure that they were cyans but i print them and sure enough. Now I called the nursery and asked where the plants came from and they said a grower in marin county. So the cyans hitched a ride to my area and fruited.
Now if i was to used cyans in an out door bed, i would use spores from a sf specimen and maybe do one isolation and then put it to wood or just do a multispore syringe and spawn that to wood. I have "heard" that wood lovers do well growing from wild print to syringe with little contams.
As for the virgin mycelium, lets this say that this is the lease favorable of outdoor wood lovers and that why it only gets the bark bed and about 1x3 foot section of the main bed. The most favorable strain is not adapted for my area yet and does not grow wild here so it only gets a few feet in the bed but it does grow here.
The majority of the bed is a favorite of hunters in the pnw and sf area.

try cyanofibs, they seem to be the most adaptive. They are taking over the pnw and northern cali

if it weren't for the sake of relocation,
i'd be preping some PNW's as we speak.
thanks for that wheat bran tip on the spawn;
depending upon the season, and when it's finished, i'd like to
put it in the ground this year so that it will be well adapted for
next fall.

we'll see.

the cool thing about wheat barn/saw dust is that it colonizes in a few days. AS soon as it germinates you cna shake it and it will cover most the jar, one more shake and you are good to go

ps. cyanofibrillosa
we call them fibs because none of us can pronounce the real name, sort of like sil-o-sybe or sil-ah-so-be
