How soon after rain is the best time?

It just rained here in Oregon..yay!!! And my question is...how soon after it rains is a reasonable time to start hunting? This is my first time hunting, and although I have done some research, I really won't get practice until I do it. But any help is appreciated, and although I have searched the shroomery, I haven't found this particular answer. Thank you all!

Theres no written rule on how long after it rains, it doesn't work like that. It depends on the previous condtionns prior to the rain, like has it rained at all in the past month, if not one lonely rain won't do shit. Just get out there and look, look daily, you learn how to tell when to look and when its not worth your time checkng, and even then you'll find them when you least expect to see them. Just hunt yer ass of and be persistant :)

Thanks, LK...we haven't had rain here in Oregon in a while, and that is what I am concerned about. It has been very dry...but I am hoping the coast this weekend will show some promise. Thank you for the info. BTW, your pic are great! Are they taken with a digital camera?

I'm from Oregon too Yew4ea, Portland area.. Anyways, I bet any time this next week will be a good time to start checking. I was actually lucky enough to find a couple psilocybe azurecens 2 weeks ago along the coast, and that was before really any kind of good rain had come in so you never know... Anyways, good luck to you, and hey, if you have any other questions I might be able to help out some.

Why do you say stuck, pyromaniac? Do you have fields around where you are? I just might have to go for a very long walk tomorrow. heheh

I used to get all eager & go out after the first couple days of rain . . . never found anything, except sometimes in well-watered lawns where the soil was already moist. Might be better on the N. coast where they've had cooler temps & fog for awhile, but here in the valley we got a 5 month drought to recover from. I've found it not worth looking until it's been cool & cloudy for at least 2 weeks & rained at least an inch or more total. Some edibles will fruit sooner, but Psilos like it real wet.

Thank you, Woodsman. It is nice to have several different experiences to judge by. I think the best experience is going to be my own. I am going to try the coast this weekend. I am going to look for anything and if I find psilos great, if not, then I will have fun looking. I have taken an interest in mushrooms, but I just cannot remember the latin names. I think that has always been the problem with me and the sciences. Anyway, thank you for your info

Woodsman hit the nail on the head. With weilii, it usually takes atleast a good inch of rain, followed by cloudy days and humid weather, then about 7-8 days after that rain I'll find mushrooms. It takes a while, most psilos are slow growing and need some time after rain. Cubes on the other hand are pretty quick, there are always some pins waiting for rain then they just shoot up in a day or two :) Once the rainy season is in full gear, the mushrooms will always be out, but when its been dry for a while, it takes a while for that rain to take effect and fruit some mushrooms. I've always said that psilos are water hogs :) Its true.
