Yes, but dont forget that our water is treated and chlorinted.
By the way, good people, Im not saying that a biological attack is impossible. Im just saying its less probable than many people think. Also it would not be quite as apoclyptic as fear mongers would have us believe.

I happened to be at a lecture given the former assistant secretary of defense Robert Galucci last thursday on this very issue.
He said that the threat of biological warfare was a larger concern to us than the fact that the when the Soviet Union disbanded, over 1000 warheads were "lost" and most of them are probably still in the hands of terrorists.
What is really scary about live bug viruses that can travel from person to person is that they are very easy to make and unbeleivably cheap. In Iraq, for example, we managed to disband their nuclear productions as well as their chemical and guess which one is up and running again. It is almost next to impossible for espionage to detect biological weapons production facilities, while detecting nuclear weapons facilities is not too difficult.
Oh yeah. If that doesn't do it, Galucci said that while smallpox is the biggest threat to us in terms of terrorist activity, there are bugs that have been developed by nations that are deadly and contageous enough to make it a relatively obscure threat. Apparently, more information is classified so that was all he told us. But I beleived him and it scared the shit out of me.
I'm telling you, the shit this guy was telling us made some girl faint. Maybe we shouldn't live in fear, but its hard not to.

Yep, two cases of anthrax. Don't believe for one second these were accidental or naturally occuring. As far as small pox, that one is scary. We don't have enough vaccines. We may not have the correct vaccine if they use a genetically different virus than the two cultures that are available.Worst of all, it is highly contagious. If they hit us right now with small pox, we don't have enough vaccines to protect the population. At least pulmonary anthrax is not contagious, but we don't have enough of this vaccine either.Hell ,we didn't even have enough for the military. They had to immunize the military in phases, because there were not enough vaccines to do it all at once. They may not be able to do too much as far as chemical warfare is concerned, but they better get their butts in gear as far as germ warfare is concerned. They can work on a small pox vaccine and start vaccinations again.Like wise they could vaccinate against anthrax and eliminate that threat. I'm sure the terrorist would find other things to throw at us, but at least those two would no longer be a threat.

Just were the hell are these terrorists going to get smallpox from?!!? this whole thing about smallpox originated in a popular science thriller someone had written. He wrote about smallpox to get people to buy his book. Now US politicians are using smallpox to drum up yet more patriotism from the american people. In my own oppinion, as a proffesional scientist (mad one though!), this whole smallpox thing is plain old horse shit.
