What is the best wood?
    #4042274 - 04/11/05 07:56 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I`m new here so let`s start from the start. For shiitake, what is the best kind of wood? I really would prefer logs, than chips, because they go on for many years.

Thanks

i believe that oak is the best for them but i am sure that most hardwoods will work

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

Do you know anything about tropical woods for mushroom growing?

Thanks.

"Best" is an ambiguous term in this case. Oak tends to colonise the slowest but last the longest due to the overall density of the wood. I'm no tree specialist so I don't know which Oaks exhibit which barks. I do know that certain Oaks have better barks for shiitake. The best way I can describe without pics and/or latin names is to avoid the type with very thick bark with deep rivulets. A very dark brown bark in my area. The problem with this type is that the fruits will push rather large strips of the bark off. The fruits grow under the bark as opposed to on top of it (through really). Basically, it is too thick.
I prefer maple. It colonizes quick, fruits abundantly and loses very very little bark on fruiting. Oak may well last longer but maple provides a greater degree of immedite gratification. I've had maple logs flush so densley you can't even see the log! Beech would have to make my favorites list as well. Basically, the longer the bark will hang on the better IMO. I also have some logs made from what I have been told is Black Oak. Bad Bad choice. The bark freaking strips off with or without fruitings. It is prone to dryout and competitor fungi infestation. Black Oak sucks.
