what type of agar do I need?
    #4041917 - 04/11/05 06:35 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

I am going to clone some portobello's, but am uncertain which type of agar is needed for portobellos.  I'll start a grow log whenever I get around to this, I am preparing right now. So if anyone would be so kind as to point me in the right direction for which type of agar I need, it would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks everyone, peace.

I dont see any portobello grow logs, that's why I'd like to make one, and try to show anyone else interested in growing them how it can be done.  I've never cloned before, but I have faith I will not fail.   Especially with any pointers for you guys. Thanks everyone, peace.

I have heard of portabellos grown using the same techniques as for cubensis.Person I talked to that grew them said he grew them by taking a spore print from a store bought mushroom and making a syringe and inoculating jars and casing the substrate.Said it grows and pins much faster than cubensis as well...hope this helps=)

Any of the standard agar recipes should suffice. I can say that PDA has worked for me, but remember someone saying they used MEA. It shouldn't matter as long as it's made properly.

20g malt
20g agar
1 liter of water..
make sure you put it in a bigger container then a quart jar when you are pc'n...
this will actually make quite a few dishes..
there is an agar subsection under Mushroom Cultivation thats really informative..
good luck!

hey thanks a lot   I am going to get the MEA from mycosupply. This way all i have to do is add water and im set.  thanks again suntzu

electric305, I hear gourmet's typically do not germinate from spores as well as cubies do, so live culture is necessary instead(all else is just like cubes, only about 10 degrees lower in the temps, please correct me if I am wrong suntzu, or someone who knows what temps portobello's need).

thanks again everyone, I am one step closer now

cool! Thanks shdwstr. Something that I just wondered was if portobello's would benefit from a cold shock?? Or would that be a no-no?

You can always clone the portobello's in karo solution. 1 tablespoon honey/karo to 1 pint distilled water. at least that's what i had to do to save $38 + shipping for my white buttons.Sorry not sure about cold shocking. :frown:

im gonna go ahead and get some MEA anyway, that's good to know though bro, if I am ever short on change.

To know if they benefit from a cold shock like cubes do, would be nice to know before I start.  I bought two huge ass caps from the supermarket today and fried one up, man they really do have a meat taste and similar texture to steak(when cooked until tender). Wow, that is so cool.  I never knew the stems were so large, the stems are as big around as a half dollar   haha, to me that is huge

The agaricus need a 10F degree drop in temp to start pinning, if you want to call that a cold shock.
Other than that drop in temperature, an actual "Cold Shock" is not required, but it wouldn't hurt anything if you wanted to do it.

Enjoy
