i bleach my jars for 12 hours, with boiling hot water....with the tops..then i wash 3 times with warm water and anti-bacterial soap...then let them sit in boiling water again till water is cool enough to put my hand in ...wash with warm water and dry with a clean towel and then place on clean towel.. so mouth side is facing down...clean the lids in same manner ...just make sure to get tape off lids...(if you use that method)...

that is what i do for a year or so now. with no problems...hope all is well ...but next time you just throw that stuff away let me know and i will pay for shipping...lol...peace

"Six words: drop out, turn on, then come back and tune it in -and then drop out again, and turn on, and tune it back in-it's a rhythm- most of us think God made this universe in nature-subject object-predicate sentences-turn on, tune in, drop out- period, end of paragraph. Turn the page- it's all a rhythm- it's all a beat. You turn on, you find it inside, and then you have to come back (since you can't stay high all the time) and you have to build a better model. But don't get caught - don't get hooked - don't get attracted by the thing you're building, cause... you gotta drop out again. It's a cycle. Turn on, tune in, drop out. Keep it going, keep it going- the nervous system works that way. gotta keep it flowing- keep it flowing.

autoclave.

wear gloves, goggles, and a dust mask (or a HEPA respirator if you
have one) and wash them out outside with soap and water.

Then pressure cook them for about an hour.

Throw away the gloves and wash your clothes after you start the PC.

The best thing to do is to dispose of them as soon as a contamination problem occurs. There's nothing nastier in this hobby than cleaning out a solid block of moldy grain. Pitching a jar with a small green patch is a lot easier and won't require as extensive of a cleaning/time/resources. I'm a total hippocrite, though, I've emptied many a grain jar that sent up the green plume. It's probably best to always do that outside, preferably on a windy day. Even if it's autoclaved, it can still be allergenic. A decent but messy way to do it is to open the jars while submerged in dilute bleach, scrape it all out, filter the solution for reuse if necessary. It isn't full-proof either, because the air bubbles that come to the surface can be mold spore bombs.
Try to identify where the problem is occuring. Is it a sterilization or inoculating problem?

umm, if PC'ing jars is supposed to kill all contaminates before you innoc it, then why cant you just clean out the jar, throw some fresh substrate in, and PC it? that just doesnt make any sense.

PCing for 45 mins should kill any form of life on the jar.

you can.

the reason people toss jars is because it can be a health hazard to clean them and it just plain sucks. also, contaminated jars can release contaminants into your house that can cause you (and your projects) problems later.

thats what i do.
load the nasties to the clave, givem an hour and discard.
then wash jars and reuse

if you open them without clabing them you release LOADS of spores wherever
you open them and you seriously wouldnt want that ..

Remember too that even if it's PC'd, spore clouds can still cause allergic problems to those susceptible. One way or the other, regardless of how you do it, dispose of those suckers as soon as you see a problem. It makes everything easier.

all the green mold clustered jars ive autoklaved left the clave with a green/black 'gunk'
of spores on them, i could basically pour off.
if i got it right, they should be DEAD so i wonder how they could still cause allergic reactions?

What causes the allergic reaction is not the ability to harm you when they're alive, but specific proteins which make up the cell structures on those microorganisms. Therefore, you can deteriorate proteins through heat and pressure but you can't "kill" proteins, yet they still can affect you.

Bacteria is one thing, mold is a completly different animal. When you breathe in the dust formed by dead mold it gets into your upper respiratory tract and can cause an immune response. Dont over think the fact just accept it. Some bacteria can be quite dangerous so just throw the jars away.

Yes, that is a viable option. But the jars can be saved

After 30 minutes of boiling water or 30 minutes in the PC @ 15psi, either/or, all the bacteria and mold and spores will be dead.

Given that many common contaminants are not deadly or are semi-identifiable with the naked eye, we can always save the jars contaminated with safe stuff.

But even if it is deadly-black mold, which can contain mycotoxins, killing the organism and then discarding or bagging it up in a well ventilated area should be sufficient.

I do not know if the toxins are still intact after exposure to extreme heat, but under the assumption that they are (just to be safe), good ventilation and sterilization will suffice.

Then you may use soap and water to clean them out without worry because autoclaved spores will not germinate in your house or anything like that
