fully colonized WBS?
    #4041755 - 04/11/05 05:59 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

I inocualted some 1 qt. WBS jars about 2 weeks ago, maybe a few days longer. Most of them are about 20%-25% colonized. They have really picked up in the last 2-3 days. This is my first attempt at WBS, and i was just wondering if anyone could tell me about how much longer it's gonna take before they are fully colonized. At the rate they've been going the last few days i wouldn't doubt it if they were done in 1 more week or so. They are incubating at 80-82 degrees by the way.

Also, ive only shaken them 1 time at about 5-10% colonization. When would you suggest i shake again? They seem to be going fairly quickly right now, but on a few of the jars 1 side of them is slower than the other 3 sides.

What strain are you using?
I dont recommend shaking them again... I had some wbs jars colonized about 50% and my buddy insisted on shaking them. Shook em up and I lost 80% of the jars.
Id say wait it out and hope for the best...

i'd shake them now...i don't know the 'proper' time to shake but i'd go for it now. that's just how i'd do it, some may disagree.

One SHAKE at around 15/20% colonization is all you need. Any more shaking (IMHO) slows the process. Be patient, they will get there.

I assume this was multi/spore inoculate, which takes time to germinate, then grow. LC colonives much faster, so are G2G transfers (10 / 12 days for me).

I would suggest shaking your jars when they are 30-40% colonized.  After you do that they'll be 100% in no time... GL bro :stoned:

i inoculated with a multi/spore inoculate of A-strain from ralphstersspores.com

i got 2 ppl saying don't shake, 1 saying shake now, and 1 saying shake at about 40%? Anyone else with some ideas.

I was thinking wait about 2-3 more days and shake one last time, but since this is my 1st time at WBS i dont really know for sure. The middle of the jars seems to be basically uncolonized, but lots of myc growth on the outside.

I'd go w/ Agar's suggestions at 15-20% colonization.  I've never worked with WBS just Rye, and I'm sure Agar has.... You'll learn quickly to take any advice Agar gives.... GL Bro :stoned:

hey agar, so you dont think it would benefit my jars to shake one last time at about 50%, because the middle of them seems pretty bare of myc. The outside edges have quite a bit. Will shaking make the middle colonize quicker, or will it colonize quickly once the entire outside edge is covered?

Could someone post a fully colonized WBS picture? My own jars of WBS are "clumped" but not totally covered. I'm going to be spawning to some 50/50 Tenn Stud Mix ([My jars are too full, about 8/9ths full] 1 qt. per 5lb right?) and was wondering how much longer myself.

yeah some pics of fully colonized WBS would be nice.

If im going to be spawning to poo/straw in an outdoor bed, would i be ok to go ahead and spawn it if it was like 80-90% done?

hey diver, thanks for the pics.

How often and or when do you shake your WBS jars?

I shake twice. Immediately after inoculation (multispore or liquid culture) and then again at around 10-20%, and that's it. The first shake gives me germination spots everywhere, and the second shake really gets things cooking.

The less you beat your culture around, the better off they will treat you. I swirl liquid cultures (not shake) and only shake grain jars 1-2 times for this reason.

Hope that helps

i gave mine a shake at inoculation and one at about 10%. I guess ill just wait for them to colonize now. It's been 2 + weeks and they are only 25% colonized id say. The centers appear to have very little myc. that's why i wondered about shaking again.

That doesn't sound quite right, it's probably a moisture problem with your WBS.  Should be able to colonize quart jars of WBS in less than a week, at around 1-2 CC's from multispore.

Review your WBS technique

qt jars of WBS should colonize in less than a week?!?!

everyone ive talked to says 10 days to 3 weeks. Myc doesn't even appear for 3-5 days.

they have really picked up in the last 2-3 days so im not going to give up on em yet. If they keep going at the rate they are then they should be done in about 5-8 days. I think i had too much moisture and now that they dried out some they are starting to take off. could this be true?

Hey Diver... you do bong hit 4 or something, then get multi/spore inoculate mixed up with liquid culture colonization times?

Day six (6) multi/spore

Day six (6) liquid culture inoculate

my jars look about like your day 6 (LC) jar in that pic agar. Only there appears to be very little myc. through the center. How many more days do you think till its fully colonized from this point? The jars are at 80-82 and look almost identicle to yours, maybe barely less thick, and i do mean barely.
